sure. lie on your back, put a heavy book over the diaphram, relax, breathe and make the book move up and down - no movement at all in your chest/shoulders. This is correct breathing and the way babies breathe when they are born. we learn bad habits as we get older.
btw, diaphragm is located where your belly button is, in that general area. ---------- The Iceman

1- Imagine your chest as a big metal tube with a rubber bottom. As you breathe, imagine only the rubber bottom stretching down and up - nothing else moves. Relax your shoulders, neck and arms.
2- Buy a bag of balloons. Blow up a balloon by only using your belly (diaphragm). Practice this twice a day.
3- Inhale all the way. Open your mouth and exhale as slowly as you can. When your lungs are empty, start to constrict your belly butt and leg muscles to squeeze the last bits of air out of your lungs (somewhat like getting a few more uses out of a tube of toothpaste by rolling it up and squeezing it)
To last any amount of time, you will need to use your diaphragm to control the volume of air in your lungs and not let it all out at the same time. Aim for 80 seconds. On a good day, I can go two minutes.

Last time I saw David Lipkind performing in town, he taught me a breathing exercise. Take a harmonica, and start by blowing very softly from the diaphragm, increasing it to full volume, and then back down very softly - all on one breath over about 30 seconds or more. Then inhale while doing the same. This will help your diaphragm to gain some control, and may improve your musical dynamics.

The best thing for you to do to learn how to do this is to go to a reputable vocal coach because it's a very necessary technique for a vocalist and going to one for both breathing and relaxation excercises will be money well spent and will improve your playing and your tone a hundred fold. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Inhaling, with a book, is a great exercise...I'm gonna do that one. We do learn bad habits, and hardly use the reservoir of lung space we are born with. I believe it is somewhere to the tune of half, or less. After you do the book technique, try to completely relax yourself..before you exhale..relaaaaaaax! Try this on the end of your exhale..without the book, and repeat with every cycle. ..push, with your focus on the space just below your navel...sloooowly....don't rush this one...you may get light headed...EVERY LAST OUNCE OF AIR...I mean, push from the very bottom of the stomach. Much like the last bit of toothpaste...following with your mind, up and out of the mouth, imagining this happening. The part of your abdomen which is pushing the last drop, is the closest you can get to your diaphragm. This is like a 'push up', effectively exercising the diaphragm muscle. Exhaling til you nearly empty the lungs completely, is a good way to purge stale air, too. Starving this large unused portion of our lungs, is the cause of alot of our dis ease. Simply put...our body needs fresh air (red blood cells)to function properly. Our brain heart and organs are always crying for more oxygen. Yet we are not taught to breath deeply to nourish our internal organs. Study deep breathing techniques. You will change your mindset within moments. Often alleviating insomnia, hyper tension, and simply relaxing your self, without the aide of anything other than your breath. Of course, there are other ways...this is my take on your question of how to breath from the diaphragm. You can start by learning what it can do for you, too. Besides playing better harmonica. ---------- Why is it that we all just can't get along?<
