Since joining this forum I have been checking out some of harp players you all talk about here, some of whom I had heard of previously, some new.I had not heard much of Walter Horton, but I really like his approach/style,and I wonder if Walter or some of the other Chicago style players could have gotten the idea of using splits and octaves from the Euro based german polka players, whether Accordion or Harp? And from listening to Sonny Boy 1 I think I can hear his influence on later players including the later amped players, but he still sounds more like a country style blues player to me.I have been listening to Jason Ricci and Paul Delay also, both great, and I really like the tone/sound Paul gets on his records.I have also checked out Howard Levy and a young lady who I think is a member here who's name escapes me,I have not heard a lot of non blues based players, and I find the tones/scales/phrasing and approach refreshing, and I think that will help me gain a better understanding of the instrument.I am glad I found this forum,it is really opening things up for me,although all the info can get a bit overwhelming.

I had never heard of octaves, splits,or tongue slaps until I came to this forum but I've used those techniques for years playing polka style tunes. Since most of those players came from rural backgrounds, they probably were exposed to some polka music along the way.

It's worth considering SB1 in the context of timeline, in his day he was THE BIG harp star & you don't have to dig too deep to hear his influence on guys like LW, Jr Wells, Forrest City Joe, Jimmy Rogers...etc. For his time SB1, was slick & urbane, according to the testimony of other musicians he was also a pioneer of amped harp, just never recorded that way.

Carlos del Junco, Sandy Weltman, Brendan Power, Steve Guyger, Dennis Gruenling are all worth checking out, too.
