This may be a dumb question but as I've stated on the forum before, I know next to nothing about harp amplification and I have yet to buy a tube amp. Would I get a good sound if I used a solid state amp as a preamp with a tube amp? For example if I plugged a mic into a little Pignose amp and patched it into a small 5 or 10 watt tube amp, would I still get that tube amp sound? Thanks.

The Pignose would simply act as a SS gain stage preceding the tube amp, yes you would still get the sound of a tube amp final stage. However, this would not increase the power of the tube amp, but if "lined out" (don't plug speaker out jacks from one amp into the input of another, signal level has to be cut down to line level via a line out) from the Pignose you would get the benefit of both amp's speakers, assuming any line out does not kill the signal from the Pignose to its speaker.

Many guys who play & love tube amps use SS devices in line between instrument & amp.

Often when using a line out from a small amp, I find that I have to ignore the settings that I would use with that amp through its own speaker alone...whilst lined out I generally find I cut back the volume & increase the highs.

If you want that tube amp sound, you might consider simply getting a tube amp. They start at about $200 - less for used. It is fun to build stuff, experiment and learn. But don't fool yourself you're going to save any money doing it that way. It can and usually will suck up plenty of money as you try this, then that, and are never satisfied. And it consumes a LOT of time.

If you're in it because the project itself intrigues you - and that is more important than money spent or quality of the result, go for it.

I just happen to have a little Crate V5 amp that I bought for the purposes of tinkering. I put a nice weber 10" speaker in it. The amp has a 12AX7 preamp and a 6V6 power tube. After a bit of tweaking tubes, I found that tweaking amps is not really my thing. That being said, I'll sell the amp for $125 (Heck, the speaker cost $40.) plus shipping to anyone that wants a nice little amp to play around with. Contact me offline if interested.

Thanks for the info guys. I probably should just get a 5 watt tube amp for around $200 after I do some research about them. I've been a hardcore fan of amplified blues harp ever since I first heard Little Walter over 40 years ago but as a player I've only played acoustic except for playing through small solid state amps around my own house so nobody can run me off. I'll be 57 years old next week and maybe I'm too old to start but I thought it might be a intresting hobby for when I retire.

Yeah, sorin, that's right. And if I do get too old to be happy I can always try Viagra.

BTW Does anyone have a Bugera V5 Amp or know if they are suitable for Harp? Musician's Friend has them for about $200.
