What effect would hearing loss have on ability to distinguish music from noise. Would typical old age hearing loss, maybe 10-20% mostly higher frequencies affect ones ability to distinguish qualities of tone? Any ideas how this would affect playing ability?

I'm wondering if I could be playing out of tune and not know it or if my tone could sound good to me only because I can't hear all of it.

I don't believe minor hearing loss would cause you to be unable to distinguish music from noise. Typical hearing loss in the high or the low frequencies, I believe, would not cause you to be unable to distinguish tones...It's just that the tones at the higher end (or lower end) would be inaudible to you. The rest of the tones that you CAN still hear will be distinguishable. So it's unlikely that minor hearing loss would affect your playing ability, as the tones at the high and low ends of the harp (if not all musical instruments) should still be well within your hearing range.....Well, maybe a tambourine and the higher frequencies of cymbals could start to fade.)
(All of the above is my GUESS.)

I'll tell you this much, i have a loss of 15% total from indrustrial noise, initial tests are gradually creeping up on me, all losses are different, some genetic, some in 1 ear from military years gone by etc, my initial total last week was 51.4%, thats heaps, and i have this thing called tinnitus (ear ringing)...the main prob i have is listening to folks speak with others or background noise nearby, but i still manage to rip out a number when i'm in the mood.

i have some hearing loss, factory floors and rock concerts over several decades. it's not serious but there is a lack in the high end mostly. i have yet to have anyone say i was flat or out of tune. there are times that i think i'm doing terrible, yet the audience is obviously hearing something different in my playing because they respond well to it. along with what the band is doing of course! this is to me an indicator that the stage sound is much different than the sound out front. it's a valid question but one i would not worry with much unless you get a real indication of a lack or loss. ---------- http://www.reverbnation.com/jawboneandjolene
