I am doing a 2 week demo on an ampex atr 102 tape deck simulator. Somehow universal audio has captured the sound of tape to a plug in. Here are a couple first try attempts using it with just me and my harp. They are both stock harps, a delta frost low f and a marine band deluxe in a. Walter

gonna love her just right

here is one with the one man band set up. I took all my isolation barriers off the drums and cymbal. I have been working on mic placements to get some isolation without barriers to give it a more open/live sound.

Isn't that a pretty pricy plugin? I had read an article about it somewhere, and it sounded pretty cool.

the ampex and studer A800 tape simulator plug ins are $350 each. I was having problems with installing a universal audio UAD-2 quad card and they had me demo the ampex to make sure we got it running right. UA lets you demo any of their plugins with no restrictions for 2 weeks. When this one runs out I will get another 2 weeks with it and will also demo the studer. The ampex is used as a mastering tool and the studer on each individual channel. This is how it is done with the real units. The universal audio plugins are in most all pro studios and many top engineers now go to them over the actual hardware when it is not available and say the plug ins are darn near the real units. I guess it is all realitive what is pricy. I find spending a hundred plus on a harp way pricy. These plugins go onsale a few times a year and I have a $50 voucher. You need a universal audio pci/e cards to run them. The UAD-2 quad card goes for $1,500. I got one for free when I bought a Universal audio 6176 preamp/compressor. I have been slowly assembling pro level recording gear over the past 10 years. I want to be able to make good sounding recordings. This makes me totally self contained- 1 man band, recording studio. Now I have no stress when I go in the studio because I own it. It is a detached building on our property. It is a completely finished central air/heat, full bath set up. It is a dream come true. Most musicians lack the control over how their music is preserved. A good engineer has a style just like a good musician and finding one that fits your sound, price, is hard to find. When you have money invested in a session it is very stressful. It might come out great, crap, or anything inbetween. Having the luxury to be able to sit down and record and feel the same as if one was sitting in the living room noodling allows for the inner creative juices to flow naturally. Anyway, I have always been obsessed with the recording thing and at this point in my life it has become a reality. Walter

Thanks Walter. I look forward to reading your posts and hope to benefit from what you have learned about recording, and music, and the music life.

By the way, I have been trying hard to register with your music purchasing outfit and am making slow headway. The problem is all on my end as far as I can tell. I enjoy a kind of a third world style of wi fi operation here in this little corner of minnesota.

@waltertore: I like your views on the music biz & life!

I guess what I thought was just the price of the plug-in, was probably the price of the plug-in and the card since I remember it being over $1500? It didn't say anything about being card specific.

Chickenthief& Matzen: Thanks for taking the time to check out my music! I am not sure how much I have to offer with the musicians life or the recording odessy. With both I have followed unconventional roads thinking that they were totally conventional :-) If you have any recording questions give me buzz. I can tell you upfront- buy the best gear you can afford, seek out a person in the flesh whose recordings skills you admire, spend countless hours getting to know your gear, and most importantly let your ears be the judge. Pretty much the same thing as learning an instrument.

The music business, like most all businesses is way top heavy with people smiling all the time so as to not jepordize their future in the business. I never could mida size my mouth. It has gotten me into lots of trouble in the business over the years. Not for being mean or threatning, but for questioning why does music have to fit such a set in steel idea of writing, rehearsing, repeating, recording, touring the songs? Now I just keep to a forum post here and there, but what I say here is the same stuff I said to the industry and basically got me blackballed. I was told by several label owners and the head of ASCAP that as long as I kept doing spontobeat I would remain poor and unknown and if I tossed it and got on board, major doors would open. Huey Meaux the crazy cajun told me if he was 30 years younger he would put all he had into spontobeat. That meant alot to me. This stuff tends to empty a room of musicians that are trying to climb the ladder of fame. Currently my view is - the world can come to me or not. Either way, I am happy doing my music in my studio and a few nice gigs/festivals where what I do is supported. Life is way too short and precious to spend it in meaningless stuff.

All Universal audio plugins work only with Universal audio cards. The new one is the UAD-2. People are selling off their UAD-1 cards real cheap. They are great but will only run a fraction of what the UAD-2 cards do. I was able to run 4 tracks with the 2 UAD-1 cards with the following plugins:
2-neve 1081 eq
2-pultec pro eq
1-emt plate reverb
1-ua precision limiter
2-LA2A compressor

The tape emulators and newer plugins will only run on the UAD-2 cards. Now I can run more tracks and plugins than I would ever use and my recording gear is far beyond my current skills. This is exciting because I have the rest of my life to keep improving!
