I was talking to two techs at SPAH about this.
One works for Hohner and one is a former Hohner tech that is becoming a customizer
They both play the 2016. They said in their
opinions that the 2016 was the best Chromatic
Hohner has ever made. It takes about two weeks of
practice before you get used to the pressure that is
used to play it.

Wish you could buy these new. I think at SPAH I figured around $500 to buy & then get someone to clean & fix it up. Even more if you have to send it back to Hohner.

For that price I'd just get the Hohner Super 64x black & gold, even brand new it's cheaper. I guess Hohner isn't allowed to make the CBH 2016 anymore but couldn't they utilize the idea and make something darn close?

Cham-Ber Huang told me he owned the rights to it but couldn't afford to tool up to produce it once he left Hohner. (This would have been about 20 years ago.)

If the rights are patents, they may have expired. Other types of rights, if applicable, might last longer.

Even if Hohner could get the rights, they might not be interested.

What I heard from Chamber back in the early days of the
2016 that Hohner gave him a lifetime royalty.
Chamber was almost killed in front of Hohner in NY.
If memory serves me well he was talking to one of the
hohners with his head part way in the window of the car.
The car was hit from behind and the window ripped up his scalp. At SPAH ten years ago he said he still suffered from the accident.

This may have prompted the royalty agreement to
be so generous.

Since the 2016 is airtight and most chroms are not
I would have to say less but that doesn't solve the
problem. Most players feel as if the harmonica is blowing back at them. The body will adjust to the
correct pressure over time with play.
It took me two weeks.

That silver 2012 sounds so sweet.I believe the silver was a gift from hohner to make his harmonica. The 2016 volume is incredible. If I'm not careful I can easily over power
a classical guitar with the volume the 2016 produces.
This also a matter of technique to reach the full
potential of the 2016. I was lucky to study with
Robert Bonfiglio and take classes in the early days with Chamber.

Ah... I had a CBH 2016, and probably should have given it more time from what you say, Diggs. It felt like a brick to me, which I could get used to, but it would puff back at me and I found that unpleasant. I traded it for a CX-12 in D, which I thought was a fair trade.

That said, the CBH 2016 has the smoothest action slider I've ever used. When I get better at chro and can justify it, maybe I'll get another.

Thanks Diggs!

I've heard about this chrom, but never saw one. I watched the video Todd provided. How much did they cost? It looks like a real bear to manufacture.

The CBH 2016 and 2012 are terrific instruments. Very airtight and not at all sticky or temperamental to play like most of the other Hohner chroms I've tried to play. Not that i am much of a chrom player anyway.

Lately I've been fooling around with a Suzuki SCX-48. What a nice instrument. Very airtight, great tone, very responsive and not at all sticky or temperamental. It's the only chrom I've ever actually enjoyed playing, so I've been putting some effort into learning how.

Found a book that has complete tab for all major scales, all minor scales and all modes in all 12 keys: "Mel Bay's Complete Chromatic Harmonica Method" by Billy Joe Holman. Very useful reference. Haven't been able to find anything similar that lays out arpeggios, though.

The last time i made a serious effort to learn chrom which was quite a few years ago, i was confounded by the double C's. Now, I've got quite a few more years of experience under my belt and my spatial orientation on the instrument is much better developed from playing diatonic using the whole harp. So, i find myself navigating the double C's much more easily.

And it's really nice to play an instrument where all the notes are always in the same place--it changes my entire way of thinking about playing. i find myself thinking in terms of note names(letters) rather than degrees of the scale (numbers). But i have quite a ways to go before i could even think about actually using chrom in a performance.

But what got me into trying to learn to play chrom is how much i enjoy the playing the Suzuki SCX-48. Very playable. Very nice instrument. The CBH is great, but i happen to like playing the Suzuki better, and i think it has nicer tone. FWIW.

I have a Hohner CBH 2016 that has been sitting a while. In excellent condition with case also in excellent condition and owners operator/maint. manual. Will probably need cleaning but has been hardly played. I will entertain all reasonable offers, I am in need of cash and will give someone a great deal. 209 968 8891 or iridemotorcycles@sbcglobal.net
Will send pics to interested parties.
Thanks

I see these often on ebay, sell from 100.00 to about 225.00. I have one too, wind savers are starting to rattle, plan to send it off to Kevin Baker soon. I agree with Diggs, louder than my other chromes, a little peculiar feeling, but I really like it, I even like the rear button.

I bought a 2016 when they first came out. I had it for several years and never did warm up to it. About 4 years ago I traded it for an amplifier.
