Hey, Jim - why do you want that mic?

You may have perfectly good reasons, or may not know what you're getting - I do not know. What I do know is this. The Fireball is one of the nicest pure acoustic mics you can buy - it is warm and clean. But it has the highest headroom of any mic I know. That means it tolerates very high sound pressure levels without distorting. If you ONLY want clean sounds through it, great. If you would like to have a range of expression through variations in hand position and cupping technique, you will find this mic very disappointing. From no cup to full tight cup there is only a small difference in tone. If you're going to manufacture all of your tone with pedals - and don't intend to use your hands to vary it- then it is a good mic as it won't send a distorted signal to the pedals - some of which don't handle that well (like the Digitech RP series.)

But compare that, say, to an SM57 or an RE10- you still get nice clean tone, but it also breaks up beautifully when cupped. For MY style of play, I like having that variety of sound in my hands - I think of it as part of my instrument.

I'm being critical here - but not of you, only of the mic. I'm just stating the facts in case you weren't aware of them.

Thanks Greg, this is right what I like in the Fireball.

I played Boris Plotnikov's Fireball V and understood that it is exactly what I'm searching for.

One guy has sent me an offer to trade a Fireball V for harmonicas. I think I'll accept the offer.

Great clean mic. Been using one for 4 years now with no issues. It shows some wear and tear but still plays great. When not playing clean I do like Gregs ultimate 57. I can get a fairly clean sound when I want but really get dirty when needed.

I think it's great mic and only one I usually have it with me for a long trips. The reason why I tend to use Fireball as the only is that it's perfect for some situation and ok for other situations. So sm57 is perfect for amplified playing, but cupped to PA it's often too muddy, for acoustic playing on stand is not comfortable to work with it (too much proximity effect). So SM57 is perfect to play dirty overdriven harp only (and better than fireball), while Fireball is perfect for cupped playing to PA, acoustic playing and ok for amplified. If I'd have more room in my backpack I'll get both with me.

I like the Fireball-V as an all purpose go-to mic, especially with the PA. I have played through bullets to amps, one of the best bullets being one of Greg's wooden bullets. I have an Ultimate 57, hi-z, and I like it in the right circumstances, with the right amp.

But when I want to be sure to avoid feedback, when the sound setup is unknown, I use the Fireball-V. On occasion I have sung though it. I have used it successfully with amp modelers through a transformer. I have used it to push a 14 watt Gibson Explorer to much louder volume than a bullet would tolerate without feeding back.

I agree with Greg that it is a very clean mic, but I have been able to get a nice compressed tone by cutting back on the volume control, tightly cupping, and playing loudly. It is a very different tone than when not cupped tightly.

Fireball V is a great mic for certain applications. My only criticism is that its tone is a little too bright. If i use a Fireball V i have roll off the highs (treble) on whatever I'm playing it through.

I have yet to use mine on a gig--most of the time I play harp thru my vocal mike, but want to use the Fireball for chromatic--that's the problem with gear, you have to get to the gig early if you want to set up extra stuff.
So in a perfect world, I would be using a Shure Beta for vocals, the Fireball for chrom, and a bullet for short harp.

I have a Audix Fireball V that I've gigged with maybe one time. I'll trade it for a new Seydel 1847 Classic in G or Db or E or Eb.

@Gnarly: If you are using an amp, just set up an A/B box for the 2 mics you want to play through the amp and leave your vocal mic on a stand. Personally, I don't use 2 mics for harp, but if i did, that's how I'd do it. Not difficult or time consuming to set up and not inconvenient to carry.

The only problem is that you may need to EQ the amp differently for each mic, but if the amp has 2 channels, that's NBD or just put an MXR 10 band EQ on one of the mics.
