Hi all,

I have started a youtube channel as a way of documenting my musical journey (Theshoulders1). I am having lessons with Michael Rubin and these are helping me enormously - cheers Michael.

I am annotating the videos with scales, tab etc to help remind me of what I am learning. I have been working on introducing overbends into my playing and with this in mind filmed a video today. Having now annotated it i was wondering if it is useful to anyone else.....warning THIS IS NOT A HIGH CLASS TUTORIAL....and definately ignore the babble at the start

Any views on the playing would be greatly appreciated as i'm very aware that its naive stuff.

Regards James

Great Shoulders.
I love seeing the annotations. I put some in a video I posted last week with hopes that it would be helpful to someone.

Impressive that you can play 7 overdraw as your first note. Not easy to play as a first note.

COrrect me if I'm wrong but are all your overbends tongue-blocked? Even more impressive.

Cheers Harpdude,

You are right I can only play using tongue blocking so i've taken on overblows and overdraws using that method.

I like the sound of the TB slaps and although at the moment i'm probably using them a bit too much i do think it adds colour to the playing.

When i get a bit more time i want to use your excellent first position blues video as a chops workout.

Regards

James

i'm very taken with the kind of jazz/swing thing you have going there. i'm much more a pucker player but i do tb more in recent years.
you have once again pointed up the importance of learning and practicing scales. this is something a seat of the pants guy like me has never really worked at.

Some really neat ideas there Shoulders and nicely executed. Thanks for taking the time to tab out the scales for us etc.,

I liked the way you kind of let us into your practice session, warts and all. It highlights the challenge involved in trying out this stuff and work required in blending OB/OD's seemlessly into a riff which you managed to do well. I don't normally play this kind of stuff but I genuinely felt encouraged to grab a Bb harp and jam along with you.

Keep up the good work.

Coleman, please excuse me if I have misunderstood you but regarding third position being minor, you can play any scale in any position. To my inexperienced mind it is just easier to play minor in third pousition so this has become the accepted norm.

Third position major scale is very usable, although I think the overbends are necessary to complete the scale.

I am not confident off the top of my head to answer your question regarding blues and minor scales although i think you are correct.

The backing track I am jamming along to is Cm7 Fm7 and both scales sound good.

I am using the YouTube channel as a place to keep a record of my playing. I think your point about scales and positions could lead to some good practice. I will look at running through various major and minor scales in different positions. it'll probably be very
challenging to get them smooth. Ha Ha more work to do.

Cheers Greyowl, your views are much appreciated.

cheers for listening to the video. All feedback is appreciated

James

I forgot to mention, kudos to you also for playing these OB/OD's Tongue Blocked! How did you learn to do this??!!??

btw If you want to have a link that folk can click on to access your YouTube channel, just copy and paste the following code and place it at the end of your post. Alternatively go to your forum account and paste it into your online signature, then it will automatically appear on each of your posts.

If you would rather have a description other than MY YOUTUBE just replace that part of the code with your own description, 'The Shoulder1 Youtube' or whatever.

Thanks Greyowl, I hope the YouTube videos will be a record of my progress (no progress and I'll chase Michael Rubin for my money back!!) and i hope they might be useful to others. Annotations are definitely helping me secure what I know.

regards James
