I have been sizing up the differences between the Manji and the Crossover. I am most pleased with the ergonomics of the Manji, it feels great in my hands. I have one of each in the key of C as well as a Crossover in G and another Manji in A. I just can't figure out which brand I like best. The Hohner has a different reed tone and response.I think it bends easier. My main D harp is a Seydel 1847 and I find that I really pull a little harder on it to get the 4 draw bent than I do with my Lee Oskar or my wifes Manji in that same key. So, I decided to play my wifes Manji in D today and I said, I'm going to open this up and work on it. When I started taking the screws out of the reed plates they flexed outward on on end. I mean it looked like a fan. I have the plates laying in front of me and if I press one end of the draw plate down on my desk the other end is an 1/8 inch off the desktop. Damn! The blow plate is warped in the reverse. I also see that the blow plate has been sanded, I don't dare say flat sanded because it ain't flat. the draw plate does not have these sand marks on the side that mates with the comb. Anybody else experience this? Warped by design?

Those reed plates will bow a little bit when removed. They have a slight curvature to help enhance airtightness when they are properly mounted. You'll see this on a lot of harmonica reed plates.

By the way, make sure you carefully replace the plates by tightening the screws in a radial (like a snare drum, or the lug nuts on your car) pattern.

Ah, so they're designed similar to a spanning structural member, for deflection? Very cool. Now I'm going to have to disassemble my Manjis to see.

Thank you, I did take the warp out of them and yes I tighten them like I would a cylinder head, starting at the center with a rotating sequence.
