Has anybody ever gone a "legendary rhythm and blues cruise"?

If so, can are you willing to give an opinion on your experience? How were the shows, the stops, the ship, meals, was it worth the cost, etc.

Thanks,
Dan

Have not been on the cruise. I did see you were from east of Columbus. I'm West of Columbus, outside of Marysville. Jimi Lee always talked about having a Blues Jam Camp Cruise. If he does I'm in.

I have not been on the cruise, but I have a multitude of friends that have been on it and say that it's one of the best vacations they have ever had. Many of my friends do it every single year and have since it started.

It's not usually filled with harp players. (That's a huge selling point for some people.)

(EDIT: Fixed a typo.)

I went on one way way back in 1996 - Taj Mahal, James Harman, Magic Dick & Bluestime... met a lot of great musicians, attended a few all night jams, eight or so gigs a day, what's not to love?

@Joe_l "It's not usually not filled with harp players. (That's a huge selling point for some people.)"

Is that an intended double negative or do you actually have some huge pointed thing you are trying to sell? :)

Hey KC...good luck on the busking, you'll have to let me know how it goes.

about the LRBC, I'm thinking of booking for the wife and I but they are booked until fall of 2012. They must be doing something right. I don't normally get to plan that far out but might take a chance. You have to put a pretty substantial deposit down even before you know who the artists are.

Thanks for the info.

We went Jan. 2010. It was an absolute blast. I'd have to disagree about it not being filled with harp players- there were lots and lots. Jason Ricci, Annie Raines (gave a harp seminar one day), Watermellon Slim, Deak Harp (took a private lesson), Kenny Neal, Magic Dick, Taj Mahal, Jeff Paris, Curtis Salgado- I'm sure I've missed a few. And a ton of amatures that were pretty damn good as well.

It was a great experience. It was expensive. You gotta book way early- plan on getting tickets before the band list is announced. We actually were on the wait list and were able to book the last 2 cabins when someone cancelled.

The music starts mid morning and goes till dawn. You see the musicians all over the ship, talk with them, have a drink or have lunch with them etc. (just don't be annoying). Really a cool experience.

Am. and ProAm jams most every day- where else can you actually trade licks with some of these guys on stage? There are 3-4 shows going on on different stages throughout the ship at the same time- if you don't like one, go find another. The late nite piano bars always have "walk in" guests, all nite long.

I'm sure we'll go again at some point- just not every year due to expense. By the time you figure in air fare, hotel the nite before, incindentals, etc., I figure it was about $3500 per person for the week for a double cabin.

Hope you get to go- it's a great time.

My girlfriend Linda and I are going to the legendary Blues Cruise in October.. San Diego down to Mexico and back....can't wait. As far as harp players Charlie Musselwhite and Billy Branch and the SOB's will be there, as well as Curtis Salgado. I think that blues harmonica will be well represented and well performed.
