I'd like to register my new band's name, someone showed me a website www.bandreg.com, seems pretty simple doing it through their website. I believe it's a one time $15 fee. Anybody know about this sort of thing, or familiar with this website?

It seems if you register the name, people could look it up to see if it already exists before they copy it.
I wonder how many bands are around with the same name

Yeah and how many bands sue each other over the name?

In 50 years I can think of maybe 3.

As long as it's not on a mass market scale a couple of bands can easily coexist sharing the same name without it needing to get messy.

Iwouldn't have thought to do this, but a friend of mine got a letter from a lawyer representing a band who had the same band name and convinced them the stop using "theirs." It was a pretty obscure and unusual name too.

It's your money, but this website, as far as I can see, is not offering legal help in that situation.

You can register with this site and still be in that boat. The website just 'proves' when you started using the name - that can be done other ways without money needing to change hands.

If every band was registered, then you'd be able to check the name. But without any obligation to register, you remain unable to categorically say no one else is using that name.

It's like people selling plots on the moon, or 'naming' stars.

Buy a harp.
