Adam did a great show at SPAH. Man that guy has energy.
I caught the end of his workshop that was so cool.
Imagine he had a whole group of people playing back
blues licks and they did it pretty good.

Thanks, Diggs. I was a little frustrated with the show, myself. I think I was slightly spooked by all the harp players! Buddy Greene said the same thing. But I had fun, and the teaching was particularly fun.

Here's a partial list of teacher/performer attendees on the blues-ish/Country side:

Madcat Ruth
Dennis Gruenling
Steve Guyger
Alex Paclin
Brandon Bailey
Michael Rubin
Jay Gaunt
David Barrett
Will Scarlett
Buddy Greene
Joe Filisko
Gary Allegretto
Ronnie Shellist
Steve Baker
Jellyroll Johnson
Todd Parrott
T.J. Klay

Most (but not all) of these players participated in Joe's teach-ins.

I'm sure I've forgotten big names.

Howard Levy showed up on Saturday and a circle immediately formed, just to hang out with him.

Adam is great to watch live.
His intensity is amazing. You can tell he totally disappears into the music he is playing.
Its as if he becomes the music he is playing which takes him over from head to toe.

Yep, I enjoyed Adam's seminar as well. He managed to keep me interested the entire time despite the topic being familiar.

Diggs, I didn't know you were at SPAH. Would have been nice to meet you!

Adam, I thought you did just fine with 1 amp. Sorry I couldn't furnish you with a second.

Oh, btw, which song did you use a custom harp on -- I know you announced it at the beginning of your set. My bet was on "The Entertainer".

Adam...
Steve Guyger called me yesterday about various stuff and he says you did a killer piece of work at that show.
He knows what the game is all about, so I KNOW it was good.
Maybe one of these days I will get to one of those things...I have maybe 10 years left, gotta work it in somewhere.
Regards,
Me

This was my first SPAH and I was in awe of the talent, of the scheduled shows and of the attendees.

Adam, I attended your performance as well as your talk on Nat Riddles - thoroughly entertaining! Then to top it off, I had the opportunity to sit in your group for the JF teach-in on Saturday (a big thing for us beginners).

Diggs, it was great to meet and have a chance to talk. You blues playing on the chromatic during the jam on Friday nite (?) was terrific.

I came away from the week even more excited about the harp and refocused on getting better. Next year I plan to join in even more jams.

joelee: It genuinely makes me happy to know that Steve felt that way. I had no idea he was in the room. His show later with Dennis was superb as well. He didn't waste a note. Dennis played a Little Walter song at one point and found a way of extending LW's approach into the stratosphere so that he decisively made it his own, much as Kim Wilson made it his own in an earlier day. The complexity of Dennis's playing is exceptional. Like most guys who've been around, I'm used to decoding what other players play, and when people don't use overblows, I can get 95% of what anybody is doing. Dennis has taken his non-overblowing approach to the point--at least on that song--to a place where I can't decode it on first hearing. He's like Charlie Parker, playing the chord extensions. It's not "outside" playing, it's just very complex in enough different dimensions that...well, he's a serious player making lasting music.

I asked Steve after the show about his Concert amp and he laughed and said something like "I've been using the same f---ing amp for the past 30 years." I thought it looked familiar. He really knows how to get his sound out of it.

Adam, that's the best description of Dennis G's playing I've ever heard.

Both Dennis and Steve put on a great show. Steve demonstrates a minimalist approach both vocally and musically. He uses a very deep cup on his bullet mic very sparingly, to great effect - the mic and amp are truly a part of his instrument.

@ Adam
So he is still dragging that ragged ass Fender Concert around...LOL?
I swear that man is certainly one who knows how to get his money's worth out of a product. I think he's the only guy in the country who still plays through one of those things. Tight as me and that Radio Shack Realistic MPS-20 I got back in 1985, I think it was.
I gotta just take a few days off and go on up there before it gets cold and visit...been too long.

Me
