Which would you prefer and why?
I may be able to get either one for what I feel is very cheap(under $50) and am looking for pros and cons for both to help me decide as it would be my first mic.

The main difference outside of the somwehat smaller size of the 540 is that the pickup pattern on the 545 is cardiod (heart shaped) like an SM57, wheras the 540 is omni directional, like a GB or JT30, which means it will be hotter, and if you're not careful, you could feed a bit faster. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Can't Ultimatize a 540. ;)
The 540's diameter/shape is very nice for use as a harp mic, but I actually think the vintage 545's have more balls to their tone. ---------- /Greg

I've played both and agree with Greg.

Greg, you just helped me decide. If I get the 545 I was planning on sending it to you :)

If you get a 545, try to get an older one. The current 545SD is very, very similar to an SM57. I do have vintage elements and transformers..... ---------- /Greg

Generally, the older the better. For my purposes, if they have the 3 or 4-pin female connector, they are "older". If they have a standard XLR (3 pin male) connector they are newer. ---------- /Greg
