I have been spending some time away from the amp and looking into developing a better acoustic playing tone directly into a vocal mic. I've put together a video that is a shootout between all the 5 dy mics that I own: Shure SM58, Sennheiser e835, Shure SM57, Shure 565SD and Shure 55SH.
Video can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xarC5RDdBjQ
I'm jamming the same song, All my love in vain by Sonny Boy Williamson II on each take for different mics to keep things constant. I'm also trying to keep my playing consistent throughout.
The preamp used was a Samson S Mix, I also use the Zoom H2 as an audio interface to the computer through USB. The harmonica was a Suzuki Manji, Key of C
No EQ used, no compression, no effects, no post processing, just straight in and straight out.
I did not wear headphones or have sound on my desktop speakers to feed back to me during the recording, so I rely on only the acoustic sound from my voice and harp. I would have no idea how it sounded like until I played it back from the computer. This way I wouldn't be influenced by the characteristics of the mic and physically adjust my playing/singing.
Please have a listen and let me know what u think. I hope it may help those who are looking for a vocal/harp mic and it may help to understand the different characteristics of these mics so you can eq them correctly to suit the environment.
You're welcome. I've just watched the first part of the vid and you have a nice clean sound going on there. I am enjoying the naural acoustic tone more and more lately. One mic - sing and play couldn't be more simple.
I am envious of your setup, my stuff's crap:)
