There's a phono lead plugged into one of the three outputs (4ohms, 8ohms, 16ohms) on the back of this amp - does it make any difference which one it's plugged into? I can't hear any difference. Also, is there some easy way of getting this amp to break up more at lower volumes that doesn't involve looking at or understanding circuit diagrams?

If you have a valve Jr. combo, pull the phono plug out. It is an open circuit so it doesn't do anything. Those jacks are for ohm matching extension speakers. As for overdriving the amp earlier, only a preamp of some sort will do it. An overdrive guitar pedal will work for this. I use a Boss Blues pedal for lower volume overdrive.

if yours is a version 3(as mine is), and has the original 16 ohm speaker, you should have the jack plugged into 16, for sure.

I've often wondered the same thing on both counts.
My Epiphone definatly breaks up well at higher volumes but in reality I can't play it that loud in the house. In fact I play it just slighty off zero and even that seems really loud.
I've only just recently got a Delay pedal, having a bit of slapback has made a big difference for me.

Ant, what preamp is in it? Yours is un-modded, right?

@Todd, I'm not sure about the pre amp but the amp is completely stock and un modded. Its got an 'Eminence inside' tag on the front.
I've just noticed that my Thingy is plugged into the 8ohms. I'll change it to the 16:o) ----------

If you bought it new, and it'snot modded, you've got the stock tubes in it. I HIGHLY reccomend changing the power tube(EL84)to a tube that's much less harsh-sounding. 6QB5 is another name for this tube, found on the older ones. I got some RCA grayplate 6QB5 tubes for a song on Ebay, and have gigged for over a year on them-huge difference. Also, change that preamp tube, if it's unmodded, to a 12ay7, more gain before feedback. Mine's modded with a tone(treble cut, really)control and is fine with a 12ax7, but a better-quality like a JJ would suit you well. ---------- Todd L. Greene

Todd, I've heard about changing the 12ax7 to either a better quality one or a 12ay (I have a 5751 that I think I will try). And I've heard the debates on EL84 vs. 6V6, but I've never hear this one about the 6QB5. Care to elaborate? Thanks

6QB5 and EL84 are the same thing, but I believe that 6QB5 must be an older military designation for them. It's not an alternative to an EL84-just a predecessor or secondary name.
EDIT:Wikipedia is my friend...Apparently 6QB5 is the North American name for the tube, although I live in North America and had never heard of 6QB5 until I did some reading on here and some further research.
Cheack this out:

There are three different jacks back there because the head and the combo version of this amp use the same chassis. You need to put that plug, which goes to your speaker, in the correct jack for your speaker. Look in your owners manual if you don't know. If you move this plug around, or run the amp with it unplugged, you could very well blow the output transformer! On another note, do they even make the standard valve junior head and combo anymore? All I ever see is the new Hot Rod version for sale. Seems pretty odd, as they sold boat loads of this amp.

Hondo-The RCA grayplates and some other similar-looking but unknown -brnaded tubes that I got together off Ebay both sound almost identical to each other-a warm, creamy distortion versus the harsh, overly-edgy breakup I was getting from the stock Sovtek/EH(whichever it was)power tube. I had first gone with JJ EL84s, and both blew within an hour-plate voltage issues, incompatible tube, I don't know. i never bothered to follow up, as I already had these older tubes that sounded just as good if not better than the JJs did during their very short life. ---------- Todd L.
