Sometimes when I plug in and turn on, there's no signal to the amp. So I plug the cable from the amp into the output of the first thing in the chain...And it works. Then I hook the first thing back up to the next thing and plug from that next thing's output to the amp...And it works. And so I go like that all the way down the line, and everything checks out as though there were never any problem in the first place....All gadgets hooked up and I have a signal to the amp. Why is my Effects board messin' with me?

Here's what I have:

It could be as simple as a bad patch cord between pedals. Check those yet?

Sounds like one of your boxes is "deactivated" once you turn off... try removing each box separately from the chain to see if you can find the offending box. I bet you will then find it... you may have to check the box's directions or it may be faulty.

Is everything running from mains, or do you have anything running off batteries?

The cables are good.

It seems I would have found an offending box using the method I described above.

Everythings from power adapters...No batteries.

This doesn't happen every time. This isn't a huge problem; just a little aggrivation.

"The cables are good."

Don't be so sure. If you are using patch cables, one of the plugs could have a loose wiring connection that stays in contact most of the time but occasionally goes out of contact when pressure is put on the pedal it is connected to or on an adjacent pedal. It drives you crazy because the problem only occurs intermittently.

The more gear you have, the more problems you will have. But, this used to happen to me until I figured out it was a loose connection in one of the patch cord jacks. FWIW.

Right now, I'm gonna take a nap, but later I'll put a meter on them and jiggle them around to see if I can get the needle to move....I hope so.

Edit:
No, wait...
I'll just wiggle them next time it happens while it's turned on.
(See? I need a nap.)

This happens to me often. Almost every time it is simply a cable that has worked it's way out of the jack. Pedals get moved around from transport or stepping on them. I wiggle every cable before I start ripping things apart.

I'm appalled nobody commented on the amazing graphic you made of your pedal set up. Clearly you put a fair amount of work into making that. If you have the patience to sketch that out there's no doubt you'll be able to figure out this problem. I'm impressed

Aw, shucks. Thanks.
It's just a rough sketch. I made this for reference in case I scramble stuff up and don't remember how I had it. I much prefer this sketch to a photo. It doesn't show up very well in a photo.

I took the felt out of a base case and stuck Velro in it. I modified the lid so it comes off and I have a board to lay outside the case to rest my foot on so I don't have to step over the edge of the case to reach a pedal.

Any comments on the order I have things in would be welcome.

BTW: I have a 12AT7 tube in the preamp
