To all readers of this list who want to purchase something from a vendor in another country -
We love your business - our livelihoods depend on it. We do understand you have duties to pay. We know those duties can be quite high in some countries. We are sorry about that.
But please do not ask us to falsify federal documents on your behalf. DO NOT ask us if we can "mark it as a gift" or "for repair/return" or to state an artificially low value on the customs form. You're not only asking us to commit a felony, you're asking us to admit to it in public forums, or over email, leaving an audit trail that would ensure an easy conviction! If you want us around to serve you in the future, please recognize that this is a type of request we simply cannot comply with.
Thanks for understanding. I post this today only because it just happened to me - it happens all the time. I know it just didn't occur to you or you wouldn't have asked in the first place - but I thought I'd say something while it is fresh in my mind.
Thanks for understanding.
---------- /Greg

I feel for you on this. I've dealt with this practically every time I've sold a used car. Buyers often ask to devalue the car on the bill of sale so they will pay less sales tax. The solution is simple: buy what you can afford. Fortunately, integrity is it's own reward on either side of these deals! All the best, jay ---------- Music speaks where words fail.

I've bought and sold a lot of camera and music gear through ebay over the years, I understand what you are saying. How can I insure an item at it's full value if you want me to low ball it to save on the customs? I don't do it either Greg, in fact, I stopped shipping to some countries. I've had guys berate me because something I sold them sat in customs for a month and then they wanted me to pay for the big tariff. I often lose on the shipping too, the online estimate never matches what I end up paying.

Occaisionaly a customer will ask me to falsify an insurance estimate to either cover thier deductible, or maybe put a little cash in thier pocket. I always tell them "You know I won't lie to you, so why do you think I'd lie for you?" Works every time. ---------- I used to be young and foolish. Now I'm not so young.
