I've heard of cleaning harps in the dish washer, and finally tried it. Good results. (No hot dry)
Tip: my soap powder left a white dusty residue inside the channels. Next washing was water only. ---------- Stay Well Play Well

Dishwasher? Dammit, my mate told me Washing Machine.
On reflection I should have chosen a slower spin cycle as I must admit I totally underestimated the destructive power of the 1400 RPM spin even with added softener.
On the plus side at the end of the first spin cycle the machine played an amazing high speed riff, must go now and tab it before I forget it.......:)
.......But seriously, I have heard of Diswasher cleaning of harps, but haven't been bold enough to try it yet. Did you disassemble the harp and have you tried it with both plastic and metal combs, obviously wood combs is a no-no.

How hot does a dishwasher get? Really not sure about this. German silver and stainless steel maybe, but brass and heat not a good idea. As for plastic combs it's not hard to imagine them warping with the heat. Maybe you didn't do too much damage the first time, maybe the damage is hidden, maybe I'm just over cautious, but even if I had a dishwaher (I don't) I would never do this. Why are people so obsessed with cleaning harps?

I used to make my own beer and a big (important) step is sanitizing. Everything has to be sanitized and special sanitizer formulas and liquids are sold for this purpose. It gets to be a pain in the ass and so there are always methods to try to make it easier and less time consuming "but thorough." A successful method that some use is to put the bottles to be sanitized in the dishwasher. From what I understand some washers have a sanitize setting. Then again there are those who claim a dishwasher doesn't get hot enough to "sanitize." Someone once said that 140 degrees will do it and some washers do get that hot. But I'm talking about "sanitizing" and beer bottles/equipment must be sanitized. I suppose "cleaning" a harp would take less heat.

Not really a good idea. Too hot & soap/detergent that will leave traces. But the biggest problem I see is in getting the harp completely dry as some harps have channels in the combs which are sealed off by the reed plate but under heat/pressure will give. It would be hard to dry out these combs properly.
Clean by stripping the harp apart & soaking parts in warm water with steradent denture tablet, then rise, then dry & reassemble.

Supposedly Seydel Silvers are "dishwasher safe", or so I was told at SPAH 2008 when I bought one. It was said to be the unique comb material and the way the plates and reeds were made. I never tried it. I would not trust a SP20 to make it out ok... ----------
