Just wondering if anyone has before and what they did it with. Primer and spray paint or have a body shop do it? And is it easy to separate the element from the housing? Appreciate any advice.

I've never painted a mic before. But I've painted plenty of other stuff. The trick is you use layers and wet sand between shots. The more time you out into it the better it'll turn out. I'd do two coats of primer, three coats if color and 3/4 coats of clear. But I'm no professional, just my three cents.

There is no such thing as an SM545 - you have either a 545 (plastic cartridge) or an SM57 (powder coated metal cartridge.) Further the 545 handle is plated zinc - so is the SM57 but it has been powder coated. The 545's plated finish is very, very hard stuff and is hard to sand.

Getting paint to stick to that plastic will be difficult. The SM57 should be easy. Prepping the 545 handle for finish will be more difficult than the SM57.

You can unscrew the element from the handle and unsolder the leads to remove it. However every time you do this you risk breaking those leads - there's not a huge amount of room in there.

Whatever you do don't let paint get in or behind the grill.
