(Sorry, the story has come out longer than I thought - if you want to skip to the point then scroll to the 4 #'s)
I popped my live music cherry at a local acoustic jam last night. The event is organised and lead by a guitar teacher, and most of the participants are her students.
I rocked up purely with the intention of taking notes and only playing if very few people turned up and I needed to make up numbers, but when they found out that i could play guitar the other participants insisted that I take a spare one and join in.
About half way through the leader asked if I wanted to play harmonica, so i asked if they could play some kind of rock or blues that stayed in the 12 bar progression (wanting to stick firmly in my comfort zone). I comped with the singer and then took a 1 chorus solo half way through.
Immediately after this song the leader invited me to join in with her and one of the more advanced students on a show piece they had been working on; coming home by Clapton. Chords were G,C,D and Em. I didn't really know what to do over the minor, but guessed that if I stuck to the blues scale, but used 5 blow to resolve over it I would probably do OK.
At the end of the song she gives me the nod to take my solo and it turns out my guess was good. I actually suprised myself with how good it sounded. The song moved into the last bar and I thought 'Thank F##k, I've made it' when the leader leans in to me and whispers "That was good, go for another one". Somehow I held it together fo another chorus, and resolved to a nice full G chord in sync with the guitarist.
After this I was absolutley buzzing, and was congratulated by all the other attendees on the quality of my 'mouth organ' playing.
Next jams in a month's time. My mission before then; work on arpeggios and buy a G harp (a few songs which would suit A played in third position)

So. . .to the point of this thread. . .I'd just like to give a MASSIVE THANK YOU to all the people on here who have given sage advice, either directly to me, or to others who have asked the questions I didn't. I'd particularly like to thank all those who suggested I get to a jam in my 'what next?' thread a few month's back.
and finally; extra special thanks to Kudzurunner for all the obvious reasons.

No turning back now-congrats on being ruined like most of us! Playing live provides a 'fix', kind of like a runner's high, that you just can't satisfy any other way than to do it again. ---------- Todd L. Greene

@Miles
It was a great night. The participants were a mix of age and ability, from a kid of about 7 or 8 who had only been playing guitar a few months (what he lacked in playing he more than made up for in grooving to the rythym :D) to a squeezebox player who had been playing for 30 odd years. It was a circle jam for the most part (with the odd show piece thrown in) so you could allow yourself to blend into the hubbub if you wanted.
