Not Looking to take anything away from the mic builders around but until i can afford the custom ive been making mine out of the ear peice from an old rotary phone, an harley davidson turn signal shell, and a 1/4 inch jack. Decent starter mic until you can sav yer pennies for the goods

Where do you get your turn signal shells? I've looked for these to mess around with, and could never find what I needed.

I use a Mitchum roll-on deodorant bottle as the shell. I put a 1/4" jack and a 10K volume control in the base, push out the ball and put the phone element there and drill a bunch of little holes in the screw cap. Cheap, light and certainly attracts comments!

Made a nice little mic from an crystal element from ebay (it was about ten bucks and has a great tone and output) installed in a wooden salt and pepper shaker. Light, compact, good tone and looks good too.
(never use it though, as I love my collection of vintage mics!)

This subject was bought up a while ago. You will find some interesting notes about home made mics here.
