So in my thread about the Marine band I mentioned I also picked up a chromatic harp. When I opened it up I discovered that some of the reeds have what appear to be paper covers on them. Not all of them have it and one feel off soon as the cover came off. Those supposed to be there or were they added later?
I am hoping I clean this thing up and get a nice starter chromatic out of it.
this is a hohner Chrometta 12. Plastic comb. the comb is in not that great shape and there is a lot of corrosion on the reed plates. Also looks like the reeds have been worked at some point. What looks to be file marks. But the slide works well so if I can get it cleaned up I am hoping to be able to learn a little chromatic on it :)

Those little covers are called "windsavers" or "valves".
They are standard on most chromatics and their original purpose is to cut down on how much breath it takes to get a strong sound when playing, but they also add some unique bending possibilities distinct from non-valved harmonicas.
I am at a loss to explain the bending aspect at the moment but perhaps one of the many proponents of valves (should we christen them "valvies"?) will speak up.

Suffering may be optional, but it can be quite addictive!
