I'm about to try to seal a couple old MB combs that I have and have a question to you customizers out there. What is the reasoning that I hear to only seal the edges and not the entire comb? Or is this sort of like the plastic vs. wood argument?

Thanks

I think it has to do with what sealant you're using. I've sealed all my marine bands with food grade mineral oil. I don't spend a ton of time. I simply flat sand the comb, sand off the painted parts, round the tines and let em soak for three 20 min intervals. One last "light" sanding to ensure flatness and put em back together.

Yes, I'm sure their are better ways. But, this works for me.

I'm also far from being a true "customizer". More like a curious hobbyist.

I don't know, but it could be to do with tone.

I sealed a full marine band comb with layers and layers of varnish and I am convinced that it changed the tone for the worse.

I also read somewhere that Richard Sleigh thinks that unsealed marine band comb gives a better tone.

Yes I would agree Richard Sleigh. I have been though the same thing that happened to belfast harp. I have a C harp that I built a couple years ago that I sealed the comb with Butcher block because Dave Payne was useing it mentioned it one of his you tube vids. It is very loud and my best overblow harp, but I HATE the way it sounds. It doesn't have that eathy tone that Marine Bands have. Honestly if want Marine Band tone you have to learn to deal with the sweeling. The soaking in Mineral oil is the best way to make them more managable without changing the tone. I sand them and put it in a jar for atleast 3 days!
Works everytime!
