Well, according to Rick Estrin, at the Hummel Blues Harp meltdown it is R J Mischo, and that is comparing him to Harman, Branch and others!

I, for one agree:)

I've seen and talked with RJ. Yeah, sweet tone and a really nice guy, like Joe said. But, and Kudzurunner can vouch with this if he agrees with me(he has heard him play in person), we have a local guy here in New Orleans by the name of Thomas Walker, a protege' of Johnny Sansone. I have NEVER heard anyone with deeper tone. He was onstage when Hummel did his show here.

If we can expand the candidate list outside of the straight-ahead blues crowd, you want to hear sweet tone, check out PT Gazell too. He gets a very chromatic-like sound out of a diatonic. He plays (and is a big proponent of) the half-valved diatonic

Here he is from SPAH last year:

There is a guy named "Shakin Smith" that I presume most will not have not heard of that has a very round, bell-like tone that really arrests me. Lee Oscar has great tone. And Dennis Gruenling has my favorite blues tone these days but he has "edge" as well. I always thought that one of Jason's mentors: Pat Ramsey has beautiful tone as does Mark Ford....

Another vote for PT. I saw him at HCH, and yes-he's got nice tone.

And also the late, great Pat Ramsey.

Are you talking Sweetest tone or Best tone?

I would give huge props to Adam for his melodic lines and sweet tone all around the harp.

I would certainly put PT up there too...

As for best tone, pick your favorite, they are all getting the sound they intend out of the thing...

Todd Parrot has a lovely sweet tone which is particularly impressive on the higher key harps he often uses.

Cool thing is many of these cats can change their tone to go with the song...either by embrochure and/or equipment.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.....best tone is in the ear of the listener.

Well, it's clearly subjective and it depends on the song, but at the moment I'd pick Steve Guyger and Gary Smith:
