HI, I have a few combs that are sealed..( bloodwood, walnut etc) but they have no finish...I decided to make them look better and used a 1200 grit sandpaper to sand the outer edges..(not the tines) ..now this experiment made the comb edges super smooth to touch, but dull..I want them looking (shiny) like a glossy feel or at least should look bright . Any help how to go about polishing or applying gloss finish would be greatly appreciated.. Also I have a Seydel Solist pro comb which is maple..but the edges/sides have this golden/brown shade which looks nice / also the tines have some kind of hard gloss finish which is super smooth on the lips..any clue as to what Seydel use on their combs?
WIll appreciate any kind of info on this ..Thanks!!!

I have had success with polishing on some water-based varnish.
I use a microfiber (lint-free) cloth and vinyl gloves. I dip a finger into the can and spread out the finish onto the palm of my other gloved hand. This dries it a bit and it gets a little thicker. I spread (dab and spread) that onto the surface of the comb. I basically only put a thin layer on - just enough to see that the wood has gotten wet. I do the same to the other side and then polish both sides with the cloth.
I rub until it's smooth. The whole process takes about 40 seconds.
Repeat a few times and let it dry. I do this whole thing a few times over a day or two.
Nothing beats an unfinished comb. But when I buy vintage harps on Ebay, I can't leave them unfinished so this comes in almost as good.
For a brand-new comb, I would just seal the insides of the tines with a little water-based varnish using a small brush and leave the surfaces in contact with the reedplates unfinished.

HI what u have just described is that sealing ? (since u said u do it to both sides)sorry im not very familiar with the whole sealing process ..the combs i have are sealed, but I dislike the finish at the edges ( which is purely cosmetic~)..just want to make the harps look nice and glossy.

Logansays,
Arzajac is simply saying DON'T seal the top and bottom sides of the comb where the reedplates mount.
You are talking about sealing the edges and tines of the comb which is fine.
