The trick is to dick around with it until it sounds good. If it sounds good, it's right. . .

Of course you could always just use the Fibonacci tonal sequence, but it gets more complicated than just dicking around with it. . .

Put a verse of the song to play in a loop
Play one note at a time on a keyboard from C to C
Write down the notes that sound like they fit and discard those that don't
The keepers are the notes of the scale.

Or (similar to jimjam's post), use that keyboard to find the notes that are in the tune. (Play the tune.). Watch out for accidentals.

Watch Jamey Aebersold's "Anyone can improvise" DVD. Probably a good scale to start with is the pentatonic scale (minor and major). You can get a lot of milage just out of that.

Here are the pentatonic scales on the diatonic harp (thanks to hvyj!):

I found this on hvyj's profile page:

Here's my quick and dirty trick. (does not work 100%)

play 5 draw.
If it sounds OK, use a blues scale
If it sounds bad, play major pentatonic.

does not aply to minor scale tunes. If it's minor, play 3rd position minor. (remember, I said quick and dirty)
