with a budget of something resembling $250 It would be my 2nd chromatic harmonica. My first was a 24-hole, bad quality Golden Cup harmonica.
What I'm looking for is playing everything from jazz-classical and I use the "U-tongue" block on chromatic since I don't need to use bends and I've heard that O shaped holes are better for "U-toungers" than [] shaped holes like the harmonica I currently have.
Any tips? I've considered the CX-12 but some say the air-leakage is catastrophical. An air-tight harmonica would be preferable since my technique isn't that good.

I'm having fun with a 'True Chromatic' Seydel tuned up by Jim. Might be a bit over your budget but worth it mate! :~)

I don't think the CX-12 is leaky--I like it and have been using an Orchestra tuned one (in bebop--so blow is G Bb C E and draw is A B D F) as my main chrom-- But I work for Suzuki and believe their SCX line is even more airtight--and sounds more like what most people expect a chrom to sound like. It's cheaper too--or at least it was before we raised prices 8( I would go with a SCX-56--it gives you two holes below middle C, a better range--it's a 14 hole instrument.

Gnarly did you believe the SCX was more tight than the CX12 before or after you started working for Suzuki? Just kidding. From everything I've read they are suppose to be very good. I have not owned a SCX so I don't know. I do know the CX12 is Great! I would be very surprised if the SCX is better. I really like your idea Gnarly of converting 12 G to a C. what bout going all-in and buying the SCX-64 ? I would like having those lower jazzy tones, any dissadvantages with that harp?

my budget has kept me in 12 holers for several years. i just got a scx48 last week. see my writeup on it here.
i've had a 270 which i killed. currently have another which i do not care for at all. started out with chromettas. moved up to a hering 5148, and now the suzuki. it came in at about 60% of $250!

I am playing a SCX-64 onstage now--and I am digging the low tones--it's very airtight. But the CX is a great horn, Bill Barrett wouldn't be playing it if it wasn't a great blues harp. And don't forget, Brendan made all those CX-10s with Suzuki plates. The 270 is so 20th century . . .

@Shajan I paly a CX12 and can assure you it has no air loss issues. All chromatics do though from the factory. The CX12 and the SCX harps are said to be the most air tight. There are things you can do to seal them up beeter. If you buy A CX12 I can offer pointers. Gnarly works for Suzuki so I'm sure he knows some tricks with the SCX harps.
