Hi, I'm a new member to join, though I have been reading the forum for quite some time. Here's my question: I have a great sounding Silvertone 1471 amp that I really love. The cabinet is in great shape but there's not much to it. My thought was to replace the cabinet with something more substantial and with 2 speakers. I was thinking about either 2 10" speakers' or maybe a 10" and an 8" speakers with similar specifications. Does any of this make any sense or am I just wasting my time and money? Would mixing 10" and 8" speakers make sense? Thanks for your time.

Sanity check - If it sounds great why change the cab & speaker, it will sound different if you do? If you love it why not leave it be and just build something else? It's better to have an idea of which specific speaker you need than arbitrarily throwing about sizes.

My main concern is that I play in a band and I don't think it will hold up very well because of it's slight build. I could also hope with a larger 10" speaker to maybe pick up a little bottom end, but with keeping with the 8 also maybe keep the solid punchy sound I'm used to hearing. I alway play miked or with line out to PA. Thanks for your response.

Well, yes, if lugging in around clubs, a more sturdy cab would be a good idea. For a similar design, a 10" has better punch & edge than an 8"...bottom will depend on the model you choose. If miced, the speaker size will become pretty moot. No reason not to use a 10" & 8" combination as long as you find 2 speakers of the same impedance, that you like, that match the amp's output, you really want 2x8ohm speakers in parallel for a 4ohm output.

So, you don't believe the cabinet will hold up? Cabinets are relatively easy to build. You may try building one that will hold a larger speaker and experimenting with it to see if you like the tone with the larger speaker. There are people out there that will make cabs for reasonable prices. I wouldn't fool with much if you already like your tone, though.

Thanks friend, that was what I was hoping to hear. I was looking at a couple 8 ohm 15 watt weber speakers ... by the way I checked out your site and like you music.
