Ok got a paypal account for skype teaching. I'm still trying
to figure out how it works. It seems like the person
logs into their paypal account puts in your email account
puts in the money and away we go. As soon as I can confirm this I'll give you guys more details on how to contact me
if you want lessons.

There are a lot of options for receiving paypal payments. But contrary to popular belief, the sender does not have to have a paypal account to send money. Nor do they need to log in to send money either.

Basically it depends on how you set it up on your end.
You can "send an invoice" via e-mail, you can create a static webpage (if yo have your own website) with 'Pay Now' buttons etc etc. You can also set up recurring subscriptions (annual, monthly...)that the end user can select.

And if you have a Droid product there is an app that allows you to accept credit card payments like a "real" merchant. (I am pretty sure they offer the app for iphone/ipad as well)

When you sign up (free) it's similar to paypal. But you get an actual card reader that plugs into the cell phone headphone jack that allows you to swipe a credit card.
Or you can use the "phone order" option where you just enter their credit card and customer information. Once set up, the funds are deposited directly into your bank account within 24 hours. Similar percentage transaction fee as paypal. About 3% or so.

I am not affiliated in any way to this product and service, it's just something I use in my businesses and it's awesome IMO.

"Please, any of you who are taking payments through paypal - at least consider setting up an alternative payment system alongside your pp account."

The problem is that most of the other online payment systems are way more expensive (to the seller) and much less accessible. Some of the more obscure ones are probably unsafe - I know many "roll-your-own" payment systems are unsafe.

As it has been said, you can pay through paypal without needing an account with them.

@ arzajac - Ok, yeah, and I wouldn't want it to be more expensive for anyone to sell their goods and services. Selling harp related stuff doesn't seem to be a sure way to amass great wealth to begin with and I respect the vendors enough to let them call the shots and run their business as they see fit. If i want what they are selling bad enough I might take a chance with pay pal.

I just think that it's a relief to see that there are still some who will accept a check or a money order. There are at least 3 regular posters on the forum who will do that for you. It's fair to let them see if your check will clear before they send you your purchase and if the check bounces they might need extra to fix all that.

The more that any one business can monopolize services or access to services the more we all end up working for them.

Hey that sounds familiar. Maybe this could be good for another conspiracy theory. The bilderbergers, the Rothschilds, and pay pal. They are everywhere.

As my friends six year old son said at the dinner table last night, "They have far reaching testicles".

I have used PayPal since they started (about 1998 I think) and have had zero issues. I've used it for multiple businesses, ebay and personal use. Very convenient.
I've read the horror stories though. I guess it's a YMMV deal.

And if you need an alternative, as mentioned, check out Square Up. You can take credit cards in person or over the phone. There is even a [free] card swiper you can plug into your smartphone (used with app)

I recently used my smart phone and Square Up at my garage sale. Made more sales by accepting credit cards. In my driveway!
