Last night I was sitting in with a band and was required to play an extended solo in B harmonic minor. So, I used a D harp in 4th position. I know how to play harmonic minor in 4th position, but I had never actually done it in live performance before. Wow! You can really wail playing harmonic minor in 4th.

I thought it would be hard, because you have to drop 3D** a half step to 3D*** and 6D a half step to 6D* in order to get the major seventh. But those are terrific bends to lean on and you can get a wonderful wailing sound playing those notes. I had no idea it would sound like that! I guess the moral of the story is you don't know what you can do until you try it under live conditions with a band. Live and learn....

or just pick a spiral harmonic minor and you don't need any bends at all.
