In the song "creeper creeps again" by James cotton, does anybody know what brand of harp he's using? I think its a marine band but is so loud and big sounding!

Until the last 3 years, Cotton has been using Marine Bands for decades. In that version of the Creeper, as recorded on the Bhudda label back in the 70's, they were tuned to 7LJI, and they were better harps than they were in the 80's and 90's. They don't tune them to that tuning anymore but the newer stock plays better than they have been in over 25 years. ---------- Sincerely, Barbeque Bob Maglinte Boston, MA http://www.barbequebob.com CD available at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/bbmaglinte

Cotton is amazing! He's got the most amazing tone.
Back around 1984, I had been playing for about three or four years. I dropped into the jam at the Kingston Mines in Chicago. Sugar Blue was hosting the jam. Not many harp players ever ventured into that jam. After several months of hanging out, I mustered up enough courage to sign up on the list. Sugar Blue called me up. I was super nervous. It wasn't uncommon to see guys like Junior Wells walk in and play a few numbers.
I get up on stage and start playing Juke. Everything was going along okay until James Cotton walked in. He stopped and listened. He was talking to Sugar Blue. I felt like he was looking straight through me. It was incredibly unnerving. Of course, the wheels came off my playing.
I was immediately ushered off the stage. Cotton came up and blew an phenomenal version of the Creeper. The whole time he was looking right at me. I was getting my head by James Cotton. Man, did I feel like crap!
After he got done with that tune, he played one more and went outside. I was feeling really low. I went out and talk to him for a bit. He couldn't have been nicer and gave me some pretty good advice about music. It was a super cheap harmonica lesson.
That night, I learned a lot about tone. We both played through the PA. We were both playing Marine Bands. He sounded like James Cotton. I sounded like the mating call of a dying rhino in comparison. In retrospect, it was a helluva learning experience. What a night!

To Joe L. Nothing was wrong with your playing then and nothing is wrong with it now. For some unknown reason you mentally let him intimidate you. The next time he tries that, blow his fat ass away...you can do it.
