I use a Epi Valve Special 5-watt for my weekly jam. I love the amp's overall sound, but need a better 10" speaker for it. What replacement speaker would give me a middle of the road (not super brown or too bright) sound at a moderate cost?
I don't use the fx on the amp, preferring a delay pedal.

You might want to measure your speaker. The combo uses an 8 and the stack uses a 12, so you may be looking for the wrong thing.

Mark, the Special uses a 10". The Junior combo has an 8". ---------- Todd

It didn't bother me... I knew your assumption. Not alot of people are familiar with the Special; they didn't sell it for long and I doubt they sold many. I just love the amp primarily for it's large speaker enclosure and features (ext. spkr.jacks, standby switch,eq,etc.).

I second Kingley on that particular Weber recommendation, although cheap they aren't. A Sig with the Harp dustcap might be a good option(smooth cone, ceramic). ---------- Todd

Depending on your full setup, you may want to look at NOT adding speaker break up...

Well, it's hard to spend less than $50 for anything, and another $50 still beats finding a different amp for doing something that's not making me any money. :) If I ever get rid of the amp, I can pull the better speaker out of it, 'cuz a cheap Epi's never gonna be worth alot, I think.

Depending on what you want to spend, either the Weber sig 10 alnico smooth cone w/ H dust cap (have one in my Kalamazoo, love it); or for more $, the Weber 10A125-O (smooth cone) w/ H dust cap. The Eminence Lil Buddy is also a good suggestion (I have one paired with 10A125-O in a 2x10 combo). But for just a 1x10 I'd probably go with one of the Weber alnicos.

I really like the Lil Buddy I bought. It has a darker tone than many speakers, including my Webers. ----------

Look for the Eminence stuff used. I got a Ramrod for $55. The Weber Sig stuff will be a great choice and cheap. If it were a 50w amp, you'd maybe want the vintage series, but with something that small, the Sig will be a great fit.
I'd go with the ceramic smooth cone. I know it goes against my opinion of a clean and loud ceramic speaker, but I liked the smooth coned 8" WAY better than the ribbed. It was louder and I didn't think it added any unecessary distortion. ---------- Mike Quicksilver Custom Harmonicas

Thanks for the help y'all. It doesn't look like I can go wrong if I stay within the suggested parameters of choices.

I find the Jensen 10" P-10QR (am I saying that right?)works great in my Epiphone JR V3. It originally had a stock 8" Eminence...something I think it was Lady Luck or something in it BUT I squeezed the 10 " Jensen in!) The Jensen was one of two that I took out of a 59 FenderBassman 4x10 when I put in some Webers

I agree in part with Kingley. However I would get the Weber 10F125-0 because I prefer a ceramic to Alnico for fullness. The Sig series Todd mentions is OK but you get what you pay for and the difference between the Sig series and Vintage series is humungous. The 10F125-0 is $85 .
