Any mic tinkerers out there know how to pull the element out of a shure commando without wrecking the mic or the element? I've tried prising the grill off the front with a screwdriver, but it doesn't look like its going to budge without wrecking the screen.
I'd like to try the element in a bullet shell, but keep the mic body intact for my collection.

Incidentally, the mic doesn't sound great as it is; would you say the commandos are generally thinner in tone than other CM's, and could this be a result of the stick body?

@didjcripey,.
use a razor knife to cut the glue around the grille,..then pop the grille off with a lil flat blade screw driver ,..
That element won't sound any better in a Bullet shell as you'll not find a gasket to fit tight enough to seal it ,..Course there is the black tape trick ,.the pipe foam trick,. all jusn as far as a good gasket goes !!
An Yes,.the Commandos are generally thinner in tone than other CM's,

@rharley Thanks for the info, I figured it might be something like that.
Of course a good gasket is always preferable, but there are ways around it; I use a combination of outsize gasket, pipe foam and hot melt glue, usually works well.

Given the tone of the element, maybe its better just to keep the mic as is, as a bit of history, I reckon they are an interesting intermediate step between bullet and stick.

RTV gasket maker. I'm a RTV artist! The stuff is like plastic gold. The only trick with using any silicon gasket maker is it needs air to dry. So you can't use it then seal up your mic. You have to figure a way to put the sealant and your element down where you want it and let it dry for a day. Then put it together. It might be stinky for a couple days, but the smell completely goes away within a few days.

A decent gasket is easy. But your other question - will it sound any better in another shell.... no, it won't. It is a decent mic but it IS thinner sounding than a "normal" size CM. The housing an element is in makes only a TINY difference in its tone.
