I have an Epi Valve Junior Head and Cab model and really wanted another cabinet with the idea of putting an 8" speaker in it. I know of the reviews on the 12" Lady Luck, but it's way loud at home.
I'm sure that, through this group, every 8" speaker out there has probably been tried. So which one do I buy? Ceramic, Alnico, dust cap, vintage, best speaker wire, other stuff?
TIA,
Hondo

Brian Purdy's 8" Speaker Review

I'm a big fan of the 8A125-0 with a H dustcap. It's pricey, but it's real good.

You know, once upon a time I bought an H dustcap and had it installed on the stock speaker in the Blues Junior i owned at that time. Know what the effect of the H dustcap was? NOTHING WHATSOEVER. Complete and total waste of $.

Fortunately, the cost of the H dustcap was nominal. But it cost quite a bit more to have a tech install it on the speaker of the BJ. Absolute waste of $.

Really? My amp wasn't as bright after I installed that speaker. I suppose i could test it, but I'm not about to mess with a good thing by removing it. It didn't cost me anything extra when I bought the speaker from Weber. It's too bad it didn't work out.

I've heard a "brefore and after" and I could hear a difference which I thought was positive (it wasn't a huge difference). My friend installed it himself. He said it was real easy?

@Matzen: Well, the speaker in a BJ is not as accessible as the speaker is on many other amps. I thought my BJ sounded a little shrill which is why i had the dustcap installed. Made no difference whatsoever.

@Joe L: I did NOT change my speaker--just had the dustcap installed on the existing stock speaker. Your replacement speaker with the dustcap may very well have changed the tone of your amp and made it less bright. But I suspect that has more to do with the Weber speaker than the dustcap.

Anyway, I eventually sold my BJ to buy a Princeton Reverb Reissue when the PRRI came out. No regrets, and I've lived happily ever after without buying another dustcap. Personally, I like 10" speakers for harp anyway. But, YMMV.
