After reading the pop quiz thread, 5F6H suggested that "Everyone should have a copy of The Deep Blues of Paul Oscher."

Well, I didn't have it, so I bought a copy today. It made me think about what other "must haves" I may be missing in my blues collection.

I have tried to be mindful of people's suggestions here - and have certainly collected quite a few albums per suggestions.

What do you consider essential?

I'll try and give my answer avoiding compilations of singles recorded earlier, basically because the blues album was a pretty late development, sorry just my inner pedant.... not remaining very inner ;-)

Paul Butterfield Blues Band

The Biggest Thing Since Colossus - Otis Spann & SP Leary with Fleetwood Mac

Muddy Sings Big Bill

Jr Wells - Hoodoo Man Blues, or It's My Life Baby

Steve Guyger - Past Life Blues

Big Joe Louis & The Blues Kings - Big 16

Jimmy Rogers & Rod Piazza - Feelin' Good

Kim Wilson - That's Life

Chicago The Blues Today Vols 1, 2 & 3

Robert Cray Band - The Score

RJ Mischo - Gonna Rock Tonight (because I'm sure that Ready To Go with Percy Strother & Teddy Kid Morgan will get plenty of votes from other parties)

Smokey Wilson With the William Clarke Band.

...just to get the ball rolling...

Hard to say what's essential - I suppose the ones that move you the most. The ones I can't stop playing are:

Anything by Gary Smith
Anything by Steve Guyger
The Little Walter box set
Down in the Delta - Paul Oscher
Muddy Waters Anthology
Chicago / The Blues / Today - the Big Walter one
IC Special - Filisko/Noden
King Biscuit Time - SBWII
Sonny is King - Sonny Terry
Tigerman - Kim Wilson
Up All Night - Dennis Gruenling

...lots more but I reckon those are what I play most. I also really like RJ Mischo and Rick Estrin but I prefer the live recordings I've heard over the studio stuff.

What's the Oscher album you mentioned like?

Personally, I couldn't live an enjoyable life w/o recordings by James Cotton, Carey Bell, Billy Branch or Junior Wells.

Something by Junior Wells needs to be up there...I've got a collection called "Best of the Vanguard Years" that I keep listening to, although I'm sure someone could recommend something better...

But in the realm of emotionality in his singing and playing, I find him really inspiring.

Okay, Mike...the rest were acceptable(somehwat!), but this one caused a belly laugh...
"Anything by Michael Angelo - the more guitar necks on the cover the better"

I actually attended a clinic he did here several years ago...Cheese, personified, but it was impressive how he could simultaneously fret the same or complimentary notes, and at great speed. These days, that and a $1.50 will get you a street car ride here in New Orleans.

Oh, Mike-you forgot ZZ Top-Afterburner.

Mike's post totally got me. I said, "really?" out loud before I read the joke-tag.

Smokin' Joint: YES Kim also released a CD of other material from the same time-period. He was selling it personally at shows last year and they were awesome tracks.

To add more directly to the topic at hand:
Elmore James, "The Sky is Crying" (compilation)
"The Hollywood Fats Band" (self titled)
J. Geils Band's first (self titled) record
Magic Sam, "West Side Soul"
William Clarke, "Blowin' Like Hell"

I've met Mr. Angelo myself. In the middle of a song, Rainforest, the power went out at the seminar. It was storming like crazy out - thunder and lightning- and when the power came back on, he looked very angry and snarled..."Now THIS is Rainforest!" and started the song again...except twice as fast.

That dude's hands were a blur. It was like watching a hummingbird. I loved the cheese factor. That was the only allure. My favorite tune was The Guys that Killed Everybody. Brilliant.

Great thread. I have about 90% of what's been posted and want to repeat Jimmy Rogers- Ludella. This is the definitive (I think) Kim Wilson and a stunning example of what tongue blocking really is.

I'll agree with Littoral that LUDELLA is a remarkable album. If you want to know what perfect harp-comping on old school blues sounds like, that's right at the top of the heap. And the solos kick ass.

Littoral "This is the definitive (I think) Kim Wilson and a stunning example of what tongue blocking really is." Agree on the first half of the sentence, but like most players Kim mixes up embouchures.

I have to say, if I spend any more money right now, I might not make it to HCH2. I think I have had the largest 2 day music shopping spree ever. Thank you guys for the suggestions! While I certainly had some of them, I did not have plenty of the others - and I thought I was compiling quite a collection!

I'll be set for a while because I am truly mezmerized with "Ludella." Truly unbelievable - I can't seem to stop listening to it.

Keep 'em coming! I'm definitely taking notes for my next spree sometime well after HCH2.
