just repaired a very old solid state guitar practice amp (Ross G10) and was shocked at how good it sounded. Of course it doesn't sound like a tube amp, but it is loud and bright and clear and breaks up nicely when pushed. I won't be getting rid of my valve amp any time soon, but I can certainly see myself using this for a change now and then and perhaps even rigging it up in tandem with the tube amp, as the prof does. The valve/transistor combo probably has a lot to do with his unique sound.
The other thing was that I tooled around trying different mics on it and found that some of the seventies hi Z mics which didn't do it for me on the valve amp sound fantastic on this, giving a really full range of frequencies that was missing before. I guess this backs up the whole idea of the right mic for the right amp.
Having spent much time to achieve my version of 'the chicago sound', I look forward now to exploring some different ones.
