I've seen this quote attributed to Muddy Waters:

"There are only two kinds of music: Good music and bad music."

Many years ago, I saw Artie Shaw on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. He said, "There are only two kinds of music: Good music and bad music. If you like it it's good music. If you don't like it it's bad music."

Was he actually the first to say that or was he quoting Muddy Waters? Might Muddy have quoted Artie?

No big deal. Just curious.

No, I'm not Duke Ellington.

:)

Anyway...I looked it up. I guess this one has to sum it up:
"There are only two kinds of music
Good and bad. That statement has been variously attributed to Richard Strauss, Duke Ellington, and probably numerous other musical figures, but it doesn't matter who said it first -- the important thing is that it's true."

So I guess everybody has said it.
