To build on the recent post of a few weeks ago that touted Skip Simmons as "the man" when it comes to amplifier tech, I'm starting a fresh thread with the above title.
Skip is indeed "The Man". I'm fortunate in that I live within striking distance of Skip, so that I don't have to package up and ship to him.
Some time back I was fortunate enough to come across a 1951 Champ. This past Friday, I dropped it off at Skip's place for a general sprucing up while I was on my way home for the weekend. I picked it up this morning on my way back.
It was cool before. Now it's awesome. I am lucky in that it was a solid foundation before the Simmons magic and laying on of hands. All original, 1951 tweed Champ. Still had the tape with Lupe Lopez' name inside. It has the 6 inch speaker with the heavier magnet. And, it's clean.
I've been working it in my office out on the end of the pier for about an hour and I'm giddy like a schoolgirl.
My hearty thumbs up for Skip Simmons.

"Previously Owned".
It's got some wear at the corners, and the handle is well worn. But, all intact. I'm still amazed at the roar I can get. Solid. No weird buzzes or tinkles. Just sound. Very cool.
Joe, I'll bring it to Paso Robles when I come repair Nacimiento this Summer.

Glad to hear the hearty thumbs up for Skip. He will be giving me his assessment on a Silvertone 1484 I sent him a few weeks ago. It was given to me by a drummer friend. It had been outside in a storage shed. I cleaned it up, plugged it in but have never heard how it sounds. As soon as I put a note in the mic the fuse blows. I am not able to do much on amps except get them to someone who knows what they are doing. The amp techs around here that I talked to didn't want to work on the Silvertone. When I talked to Skip, he was excited about getting it on the bench. After reading your post I'm glad I shipped a "piece of crap" (according to one amp tech) halfway across the country to someone who genuinely wants to help me get this amp singing.

Ok Buz - We are going to have to get together now for sure - I want to try that champ - and I have three nice little vintage amps, (plus one I built) to put in the mix. Doing anything tomorrow (wed.) night? If you bring it to work you could swing by my place after - and start the first SF harp club meeting. ----------

I have Masco 17n Skip did for sale. It is a fantastic amp as Rick Estrin and Paul Oscher have the same ones. Contact me offline if interested.

That'll be cool, Buz. You'll have to see my '41 Gibson too.

Bone D,
Alas. Tomorrow afternoon, I'm on a plane bound for glory (or, at least a short job, which is just like glory). I'd like to say that I'll be back in the Bay Area by next week. But, it's for the Federal Gummint and they are notoriously sloppy with their cost controls. A weakness that I exploit to my own benefit whenever possible.
