I don't know how the hell you get that tone when playing in a rack but it sounds great! Got a question about Dug Many a Ditch - I like the effect you get at around 1:20 - how do you do that? Is it a strong vibrato or something else?
hi jodanchudan: Thanks! I have been playing on the rack for almost 40 years now. I imagine I am playing with it in my hands. I imagine all my instruments are being played by other people and that allows me to be able to let them all go their own ways without getting tongue tied so to speak. It is a mental exercise in seperating myself into a drummer, bassist(thumb on bass guitar strings), rhythm guitar (forefinger and middle finger), lead guitar (forefinger) singer, harp player, and keyboard player, all in real time. This opens the window for the music and words to spontaneously flow without thought.
That sound you identified is one that many well known harp players have asked me about in private over the years. It is a draw from the diaphram with my tongue going up and down just behind my teeth to the roof of my mouth. I use this to varying degrees for my vibrato. When I play with the harp in my hands I can add another dimension by wah wahing my hands with it. This has influenced my singing and in turn further influence it on the harp, and guitar. SBWII was a master of doing this. I have tuned it my own way. I have no desire to sound like him or any other harp player. That involves a ton of thinking and that kills what I do. If we were in the flesh or on the phone I could explain it better. Let me know if this makes sense. Walter
here is one I did playing all the instruments and overdubbed the harp. Some of that vibrato stuff is in this one with my hands enhancing it. my vibrato on the harp

i like all three of those. "keep an open heart" in particular was very enjoyable. so like you did all the lyrics and vocals and instruments and such yourself?
thanks shanester! I am glad you found it of interest. IMO most well known players today play way too many notes and way too much. It takes away from the cool little things. They get burried in the birage of sound. Space, silence, and emptiness are the coolest part of music. they allow for the little things to shine. Forget the technique stuff I am doing and allow for those things and you will be a shinning!
thechangingcolors: Yes I play all the instruments at once and make up all the music and words as I go along. Of the 2,800 songs on my soundclick site only about a dozen have overdubs. Every once and in while I get the urge to make a real slick cd of me playing all the instruments in isolation so that I can "hot dog" more. Playing the drums, harp, guitar, singing, keys, all at once will not allow all the hot rod stuff due to brain function limitations. But it never holds my interest for more than a song or two. Even on my overdub songs I do each one in one take. I have no paitence or interest to polish things because there are too many new songs wanting to come out.

I agree with that and will certainly heed your advice!
The harmonica has so much emotional capacity and personality that in a way it's like a singer more than an instrument, it is definitely a shame to neglect that side of it.
It can play melodies but it can also squeal, grunt, giggle, coo and scream!
