Mark Hummel and his band blew through town last night, hosting a great, albeit shot, show at Chickie WahWah on Canal Street. Mark, Johnny Sansone and Jason Ricci shared the headline bill. I caught the tail-end of Mark Hummel, as I had a busy weekend of home remodelling, but he sounded great, and was an entertaining front man. His rhythm section is stellar, and do a great job of backing up harp players. The sound was stellar, with a Sonny Avender and Jason's HG50 onstage, and a good mix through the PA.

Jason Ricci got up and called out his tunes on the fly to the band in his frenetic yet totally in control way, who followed him as if they had been practicing for weeks, which of course isn't the case. True pros. Jason's performance was incredible, emotional and awe-inspiring.

Johnny Sansone followed with his Chicago meets the Bayou State sound, and had 'em dancing. He never disappoints, and his tone was spot on.

Mark Hummel came back in, and a jam commenced, with the three stars, plus Bruce 'Sunpie' Barnes and Thomas 'Tone' Walker trading licks. It was a fun, smoke-free show, but a quick two hours.

Pics and maybe video to follow.

Local DJ Jukebox Jack shot some vid(he said he got most of it), and Harvey will post some as soon as it's up on YouTube or wherever he hosts it, perhaps even the WWOZ site. I also saw a Flip camera or two in use, so search youtube and you might find them before we do. If so, SHARE! ;-)

I've got some good pics, but won't get time to fool with them until tomorrow.
