Haven't searched so there may be a thread already, but, looking for some advice or at least your experience. Is anyone using the Limelight service for getting rights to previously recorded music? Is it better to just join ASCAP or EMI or whatever? I know there are different rights and royalties for recorded and for digital upload music and it's pretty confusing. If you join ASCAP and pay your fee, does that cover you for recording covers or previously recorded music. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, Joe, I realize it's a mafia thing, but, I gotta pay somebody. My band's working on an album and we just finished a demo and there will be a few covers on there. Mostly original which is cool, but, still, a few covers. Can't figure out if I have to pay a fee for each cover or is there a blanket fee that can cover a certain number of songs? I think I understand that it's not a problem on the demo if we state 'For promotional purposes only" or something like that? We'll be sending those to mostly club owners and festivals and all that. I'd love to post a cover we did on here but don't want to screw anything up with the band since I don't really understand the whole legal deal. The ASCAP site didn't really answer my questions so I thought I'd ask here. Thanks for replying.

Harry Fox Agency is where you want to go

Joining ASCAP if for protecting yourself (or it's supposed to be - see above post) if you have an original hit - not for licensing covers.

Thanks Bonedog. Looks like the right place. Of course, the one song in particular is not listed there but I'll figure it out.
