Hi guys, im going to uni in london next year and before I dive into the world of academia id like to take this summer as an oppurtunity to take a summer theory course. However Im having difficulty finding any blues in particular theory courses and even jazz courses in the south of england. Anyone know of any which wont cost me thousands of pounds? Or would you guys advise doing a more general music theory course? I feel that this would really jump start my ability to improvise and even prof Gussow said he did a Jazz theory course which has kept him going up till the present day.
Basically, anyone know of any good courses/thinking of doing a similar thing? Time to delve into the monotonous but important world of theory i spose haha. :)
Thanks guys Sven

Sven, more structured is face to face or skype lessons, and there is plenty of choice in the uk, again see the NHL site for a list of teachers.

Hi Svenharp, you could contact Tim Richards http://www.timrichards.ndo.co.uk/teaching.html and check out some of his summer schools in London. Jazz and blues improvisation.
Another option if you are near Brighton is the Brunswick Pub http://brightonjazzschool.com/#/jazz-course/4544767319 you will have missed the current term but i'm sure they will have other things coming up.
I took some piano lesssons to help take my first steps into theory. It seems like the best instrument to explain music theory on as it is all laid out in front of you.
The Northampton week is awesome but i would be careful as it is orientated around blues music and isn't designed as a music theory week.
Where abouts are you in the south east? Bill Eborn is a very talented jazz player who plays both diatonic and chromatic - he's slightly insane (Hi Bill!) and now mainly only communicates to other humans using the circle of fifths, but he could be just what you are looking for. He's in Brighton, http://harmonicablues.bestmusicpoint.com/bill-eborn-and-the-wilsons-01/ this video shows his playing ability - but mainly shows the top of his head!!!
Good Luck in your search - please post your findings as i'm interested i whats out there
James

@harmonicanick I had considered skype lessons but its just not really my thing I think, thanks though it took some consideration :).
@shoulders Il have a think and a reasearch about all those options thanks! Im in southampton/winchester in hampshire so very much south haha. I will keep updated, I think I may even ask some of the classical musicians i know as I know a fair number of them have done like sunday/evening school style theory lessons in groups of about 20 or so, with excersises. I would LOVE 1on1 tuition but sadly, as a wannabe student I am BROKE. Ah well im sure that theory will come spilling into my brain at some point. Thanks for responses shoulders and nick Sven
