the last few weeks I got back into amplifying my harp on the rack. It has led to some cool things. Walterharp sent me a cool tie clip he made, Oldwailer and I have shared ideas on building a holder for the mic on the rack, and I learned more about the recording process, which I have been obsessed with for the past 10 years or so.

Today I got inspired to go back to the acoustic harp on the rack. One of the things I struggled with the amplified on the harp rack was the mic in the harp holder was set up to give a distorted/amplified sound. That was great but the vocals also got this treatment and it made them sound like an old howling wolf recording. Also the acoustic sound of the harp was picked up in the vocal mic. I had to spend a lot of time with eq'qing and balancing the 2 mics to get a decent harp sound and a realistic vocal representation.

What did I learn? I learned the importance of multiple mics to add depth. I put an extra mic on the songs below. I put it around 6 feet off the floor over the bass drum. It picked up the drums, cymbal, and my voice. I was able to eq this and blend it into the mix. It added a depth to the entire sound. I have played around with room mics for a long time but this amplified harp experiment really got me dialed into how to use them.

The morale of the story- you never know what you will learn from what, keep an open mind, failure leads to success, and follow your heart! Walter
