This is a copy of a post on the Harmonica Boogie board but I don't know how many folks read there beside myself and Walter so I thought I would share it here cause well... I am still totally flying high from this gig.....
So I am constantly reading horror stories of bands on the road in bars/clubs. All the bad things that happen could give one pause if this is something they want to do. But sometimes, things go right. So here is a tale of a band of pirates who just happen to have a guy who blows a little harp on a few tunes.
this past Friday my band got a chance to play at The Voodoo Lounge in Kansas City. this is a lounge inside Harrah's casino. Now keep in mind we are basically a ren faire band that has only in the last little over a year moved into doing bar shows. So for us this was a big deal. A ton of people have played here and for us this was definitely the biggest gig venue to date.
Anyway we show up for sound check and standing outside looking at the entrance I see
Totally cool haha.
When we get inside for sound check the sound team is waiting on us. there are 6 mics, and 6 monitors across the front of the stage and what amazed me was that the mics were already set up to the exact heights needed. I think I had to move mine about an inch from where they set it up to where I prefer it. That alone to be honestly blew me away.
The one blip though was they had forgotten about the harmonica. so there was no mic set out for it. But soon as I asked they produced a mic, stand, and DI box in less than a minute. I had brought my 57 but decided to use theirs instead.
The sound team took very good care of us and the other band playing that night. It was really nice to get what we termed the 'rock star' treatment. They put up with all of our idiosyncrasies and attempted to deliver on everything we asked for sound wise.
So sometimes, it goes very very right and when it does there is nothing like this in the world. And I would not trade this for anything. I get to sing, dress funny, and play some harp on occasion and get paid to do it.
Here are a few more pics from the show itself. I only actually play harp right now on three songs, nothing complicated. But it is a blast and the crowd always seems to like it. Anyway just a happy road story for a change and not a horror story :)
Ask me why I'm a pirate.......?/Users/Rubes/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2009/May 02 2009/100_4051.JPG because I just ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR........
