I'm in the market for a decent soldering pencil. How many watts?(if that's the right term) do I need. I don't really care about brand names and such. Any preferences one way or the other?

A general purpose 40 watt would be fine. There are some small lower wattage soldering irons available which are only really suitable for tiny electronic devies. Don't use one of those, you'll wait all day for the joint to get hot and end up with dry joints which could spell trouble later on.
