@Walterharp: No, that's not Magic Dick. It's too smooth and too West Coast. MD is more staccato.

Frank, I'm impressed by the stuff you're putting up. I'm guessing--Gary Smith? It's a West Coast player....I think.

i hear a jt 30... that does not sound like a harp king
they played a track off almighty dollar on the radio this week end
you could clearly here it was rod playing his silvertone amp
this sounds like a champ? maybe with the silvertone also
rod sold all his tweed amps, that does not mean you would not find one in a studio, he plays here next week.. they are having a food drive, i cannot wait.

My guess on Frank's recording : Tom Townsley
The clue for my recording: this harmonica player recorded only one solo album in the mid 80s but this recording not from this album. :)

Good morning...The player is Paul Linden off the Sean Costello Moanin' for Molasses, the tune is called "the plumber" :)

As for Wheels mystery harper. I hear a Bill Clarke influence, but can not pinpoint who it can possibly be... could it be Carlos Del Junco?

Please feel free to post you own mystery harmonica player for us to figure out - As of yet no one has gotten one right...

Yes it's David Burgin :) Frank he played a lot with Roy Rogers and Amos Garrett. The solo is from Amos Garrett's "I Make My Home in My Shoes" album. The song is Bert's Boogie. Here is connection of Carlos and David : http://www.hunterharp.com/carlos-del-junco/

I hung out w/Carlos a lot in the 90's. We traveled Germany together after the Hohner Trossingen World Championships in, I believe, 1997.

Spent time with him in Toronto during his early years. He gave me a tape of David Burgin and talked about how Dave was his major influence before Howard Levy.

@Frank: Not that tough if you own "Wild child"(downside is that I can´t play it anymore: the old phonograph´s been thrown out) and just about everything else he´s been on.
A very solid player and he has something of a distinct style, though i can´t pinpoint it ...

Frank - I'm gonna go for William Clarke. It sounds very much like a young William Clarke to me. I'm not 100% certain that it is though. Although it does have a lot of his trademarks in there, so it has to be either him, or someone he influenced or was heavily influenced by.

You´ll have to help us with that last one, Frank. (If it´s not Mark Hummel ... but I don´t think so.)

I´m really impressed with some of the stuff this player comes up with. Tried to download the file for closer study, but no go -- and maybe that´s how it´s supposed to be?

@Frank: Nope :) Thought it might be Bill Rhoads till the overbends started--

@tmf714: Try going up on the final coupling caps from 0.05 mfd to 0.1 mfd; go up on the OT and screen filter caps from 20/20 mfd to 47/47 or 47/30, and if replacing the preamp filters at the same time, 10/10 mfd instead of 20/20 works fine--sounds richer and is plenty quiet.

Tom & SJ clearly took a lot of trouble to develop the input stage and I just make it run the way it does with the 5Y3 rectifier used in development. I heard they proto'd with a 12AX7 but I like a NOS 12AT7 input best and its plate voltage should be in the 40s with the rectifier you intend to use; different fresh tubes are gonna vary in voltage by a few % so I checked all of my NOS ATs & picked a median one and changed the power supply dropping resistor to dial that one to about 45v so that I can plug in any of the others & they'll run in the 40s. New production 12AT7s I've had seem to run significantly higher plate voltage, and the input stage would have to be dialed specifically for them. I like the NOS Mullard 4004, I think it is, in the SJ1 input slot.

A tighter rectifier for playing out: I set mine up to run either a GZ34 or SS recto. I use 6L6GC for more bottom end, and I think the amp sounds better/warmer with the bias in the upper 50s. The early SJ1s have a 250 ohm main cathode resistor, the later ones have the 330 ohm resistor; either way, best to dial it in on the bench, think I wound up with 270 ohms. That runs the 6L6GCs near their dissipation limit so I put a cooling fan under there; the warm bias will feed back more easily than cold bias but output goes up.

You can make a baffleboard to replace the bottom two speakers with 10" ones for playing out; they'll just squeeze in there. With an AFB+ that yields a pretty strong output, still not a 4x10 but much stronger than stock. I tried to keep the basic sound and feel of the preamp, but get it projecting better w/ more bass. It sounds fine with an SS rectifier. I put a 5Meg grid resistor on the input jack.

Do not use the "upgrade" OT with these mods, or increase the size of the coupling cap off the input stage, as both of those bring on bass feedback problems.

How bout some mods for my Holland Westside Andy? And why does the mic signal squeal and the volume seem like its on 10 in the bright outputs even with the volume set at zero...No problems with the normal inputs? Thanks for your help :)

@Frank: Afraid those are questions for 5F6H--I suspect the bright channel problem is an issue with the bypass cap on the Bright volume pot, because they probably used a ceramic disc cap for that & that type is prone to early failure, might be letting a lot more past the volume pot than it's supposed to.

I had the luxury of about a decade of playing out on my SJ1 to arrive at what works for me, and don't know the HWA circuit at all--have the impression that it's close to a stock 59 Bassman, in which case I'd try the 5F6H mods for one of those.

I can tell it was recorded by someone at a house or something - It's impossible to guess who this is,the playing is too vague...I will need a better clue to even begin to say who I think it might be - seriously, Taddict - you will need to give us a little more to work with here!
