Must be time to start a new list! (Ulterior motive: finding new and interesting harmonica players) How about the most original, interesting or creative harmonica players of each decade:
1940s: SBW I - Good Morning!
1950s: Little Walter- that tone
1960s: Butterfield-rock, occasionally tripping!!
1970s: Sugar Blue - rock on amphetamines!
1980s: Jim Liban (Short Stuff)Play that funky music, white boy!
1990s: Jim Fitting (Treat Her Right)Just sweet!
2000s: Steven De Bruyn (the Rhythm Junks)Oh wow! What kind of harmonica was that?!
2010s: Shawn Hall (The Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer)Just the right touch of harp for each song!

I recognize others have had HUGE influence, like Howard Levy, or originality, like Jason Ricci. There are others who have influenced me more, but each of these players have caught my attention, sometimes in spite of their obscurity, but still made me want to make or wish I could make music the way they do.
Anyone else have a list?

It's always subjective I know, but for my money Paul deLay has to be on that list. 100% unique and original. I've never heard anyone to match his level of creativity on both diatonic and chromatic. The man was an absolute monster on the harp.

Paul deLay and Carlos del Junco are two players that reignited my personal interest in blues diatonic after a period of getting bored with the same ol' same ol'!

(To play exceptional diatonic, I guess it really helps to have "del" as part of your middle name!)

For unique and quirky style, Son Of Dave would be amoung my list of current players.

It's not a bad list except that the majority of Sugar Blue's recorded work was released after 1980.
