As you may know from a recent post, I love this shuffle song by Dan Kaplan. He entitled it 'Back the same Day', one of his Father's favourite expressions. My attempt is more 'Back the next day'. Can't get close to Dan's Hypnotic Chuff, chuff throughout the song as I needed time to desperately suck in air at the end of the phrases, but it was fun trying:) I'm using a Low D harp as I haven't got a low E that Dan used and my take is loosely based on his song.

That was a lot better than any chugging you'll hear me doing, but then I can't find a nice quiet bride to play under, That's got to add something. Around me you'd get hit up for money before getting half way thru the song, Ha Ha, anyway I just love that kind of stuff and you sounded good.

Wonder how that would sound on a low Bb harp?

nice one Grey Owl. you got the feel of it for sure.

I studied the track too after you posted it and it made me reflect on my TB'ing style because I incorporate a lot of this same approach but in a more typical Chicago style.

What I liked about it was the off-beat chords are emphasized rather than more "implied" as they usually are in Chicago blues. The emphasis on the chord is what gives the piece that hypnotic drone affect that is so effective. But, you have to deliver it this way or it misses the mark or at least leaves some juice on the table IMO.

So I made an effort to pop that chord loud and even every time and it got me closer to how Dan plays it. The other thing is you never hear Dan really blow an exhale chord. I found this challenging as it just kind of reflex to do this to reset breath once in a while but Dan made me think about it and having discipline to be able avoid that temptation in some cases. I hear you doing it too. ;)

Thanks again for originally posting it. Iceman has a concept of "personal groove" that I subscribe to and this was a fun one to add to the collection.

Oh BTW, FWIW I don't think of this as chugging. Chugging to me is blow/draw rhythm chords typically train style and this is much more about draw breath and more musically sophisticated.

Haha Flbl,
I had a go on a friends double low Bb once. It was so low and rumbly you could measure it on the Richter scale.

Thanks for your take on this slaphappy. I guess shuffle is a better term. This piece is pretty challenging and although you can get an approximation you can miss that relentless background chord fill which makes the original so mesmerising. (I am missing the end of the phrases while I grab a breath and some definition on the chords). I am new to TB being a lifelong LP player and this song will have me working for a long time. Also I find breath control on an airy low harp a little tricky as is the amount of saliva I have to deal with playing! It's such a lot of fun though but plenty of work to do still.
