Hey everybody,

wishing you a happy new year, health and personal success for 2017!

This is a new Youtube lesson on Georgia On My Mind in 12th position. I am using a C harmonica playing in F so the melody does not require any overbends.

I hope you like this one :)

Here you can find the backing track, a lead sheet and the tabs:

Sweetly played Konstantin. Thanks for the lesson. I'll have to put it on my growing to-do list.

A great song lesson for sure but what amazes me is your pitch control on the bent notes. No slurring into (or out of)them they are just a note that pops out like any other.

@indigo That's an amazing thing to hear, thanks !! :)
I actually recorded this one in 11th position on my first CD. The parallel minor key of that is 2nd position minor, so very bluesy!

Konstantin:

Anybody who can elicit the one-word response "Beautiful!" with an exclamation point, from Jinx, is clearly in the running for the greatest harmonica player in the world.

I agree with Jinx and indigo. You've definitely got a rare ability to nail the pitches on those bends. I think of what you're doing--that level of precision--as something that's typical of conservatory-trained musicians, not your typical blues harmonica player, not even the top tier of professsional blues harp players.

But what makes you special isn't just that control; it's the way you combine that pitch control with vibrato-control (which is also a kind of pitch control) and, just beneath the surface, something else, a very subtle microtonal control, that doesn't really come from the blues.

I'm betting that you've got a deep ethnic music tradition somewhere behind you. Parents, or grandparents, or somebody back in your family (or favorite music) who is doing interesting things with microtones.

Very nice stuff.

That's a huge compliment, thanks!

I had to think about it some time and I really do not know where it is coming from. Maybe somebody back in my family ;)

I have a classical duo project coming up. We will play Bach flute sonatas, Mendelssohn, film music...there is a lot of precision involved! Hope to share some of that soon.

Best,
Konstantin

Beautiful playing Konstantin! You have excellent control on the low hole bends and a very nice tonal quality to your playing. I think you maybe use some jaw 'vibrato' on some of your draw notes which sounds great and reminds me of Howard Levy and Chris Michalek. It's more gentle and richer in tone than throat vibrato.

It might be a nice idea to make a video demonstrating your various vibrato/tremolo techniques :)
