Hey everyone…my wife and I are going to be in Portland, OR the evenings of August 26th and 27th (Friday and Saturday) and was wondering where we might find some great blues music…preferably with some great harp as well! Your suggestions as to specifically where to go and who to see would be greatly appreciated!! Any thoughts? Thanks so much!!!

One of my favorite Portland blues musicians is dan Lange . He plays a national often with a harp rack .well worth looking up .

Also of note ,Portland has one of the most vibrant blues dance scenes in the country .

Here's a link to the Cascade Blues Association's event calendar. http://cascadebluesassociation.org/calendar/ I have not heard all these groups, but can highly recommend Kevin Selfe and the Tornadoes, and Lloyd Jones. Ty Curtis isn't bad. All three are guitarists, however, though sometimes may have a harp player. Be careful of the locations, as some of the venues are in outlying areas or somewhat distant towns.

Thanks Shakeylee and Fishlips for the responses. Good info and recommendations. For Friday, I've found "Ty Curtis w/ Lois Pain" at Jimmy Maks and "The Bottleneck Blues Band" at The Blue Diamond. On Saturday, I've found "Dakota Bob & the Business Man's Blues Band" at the Mock Crest Tavern. Don't know anything about these bands but it's a good start! Thanks again!!

Kevin Selfe is definitely somebody you should check out. He is a Delta Groove artist and his band is always tight, usually with Jimi Bott on drums and Allen Markel on bass. Kevin plays harp sometimes and has guys like Curtis Salgado and Mitch Kashmar sometimes playing with him too, you should definitely check him out. He does do a blues jam on Sundays from 6-9pm at the Blue Diamond PDX. So I'd start with him.

Thanks Brian...he'd be great to see! But unfortunately, we're staying in Portland and both nights he's playing about 80 miles away! A bit too far to go for the evening. And, I'd love to go to the jam on Sunday but we're headed to the coast Sunday morning. Perhaps next trip! Thanks for the thoughts, though!

"Ty Curtis w/ Lois Pain"

Is this Louis Pain? If so, he was organist w/Paul DeLay for many years. Great musician.

Yes Mitch Kashmar was one of the first guys I looked up but unfortunately, I can't find that he's playing anywhere that weekend. He was one of the guys at the top of my list.

You may want to check Franco Paletta's calendar for an update by then. He is a Portland local.

He was part of the Blues Festival "Harp Attack" this weekend in Joseph, Oregon. He performed along with Mitch Kashmar, and Brandon Santini (Memphis). Their trio adlib set was epic.

It's about time I got around to this.

Check to see if Jim Wallace or Bill Rhoades are playing in town. Bot real good harp players. Then there is always Curtis, but I'm sure you looked for him.

I think Snakes meant Curtis Salgado, a NW legend.

Oh yes, "Curtis" Salgado was one of the first guys I searched for. Unfortunately, he's up in the northeast on tour. So...I guess I now have to move on to "Ty" Curtis. :)
